Over the past few years he sometimes showed up at volleyball events to watch his daughter, who was a big time college player and pro on the doubles beach tour.

In addition to an athletic daughter, Rafer's son, Josh, has been in T&FN's US Javelin Rankings 3 times, including #2 in 1998. He still attends lots of meets, including almost every UCLA event.

Rafer's public profile, however, involves much more than just attending his kids' sports events. He is still very active in many charitable organizations, particularly the Special Olympics and many youth sports programs.

Five years ago his autobiography was published, which gives a lot more detail on his life outside of T&F.
