  • what happened to derrick florence??

what ever happened to man that beat M.J. in highschool was he a flash in the pan like obea moore, montrell flowers?? This guy flowers they said ran a 9.99 in highschool. Just like Henry Neal most of these sprinters run all year to get a scholarship by time they get to college they are burned out. i personally would take a guy running a 10.5,21.4 ,over a 10.25,20.42 guy who overtrains and tries to make history in highschool how many highschool greats actually acheive olympic gold in the sprints. name 10 that were ranked in the top five in highschool.

He went to Texas A&M.He did run a 44.00 4x4 relay split! I'm thinking he ran a 10.2 something as an Aggie.....mmmmm?

Most of the guys you metioned, including DeMario
Wesley had academic problems, not burn out. There is a long list of great HS sprinters from Texas that just didn't cut it in the classroom.

Not sure about those 2, but can assure you, neither one ran a windy 19.6....never.

Henry Neal was from Greenville HS east of Dallas. It was reported he ran 9.9 (hand time of course) because for some strange, unkown reason, the auto timers at UT-Austin just happen to "malfunction" at the appropriate time. I don't think he ever ran a legal sub 10, but he was very talented, had tons of potential....he just never put it all together.

Derrick Florence ended up at Texas A&M with about 1 pretty good year. Henry Neal went to Texas Southern in Houston and competed on a national level indoors and out. He quickly faded. The Henry Neal that you saw place about 5th or 6th is the same guy.

And how does that explain their disappearance from the sprint scene ?

Poor grades = more time necessary to spend studying, or perhaps even unenrollment from college to simply get a normal "job" to support themselves.

Not saying this is necessarily the case with any of those fellows, I'm just saying it's not an uncommon path. Eventually you have to realize that track doesn't pay the bills for most people anyway, so it might actually be worth the time/effort to study, or at least get a job you are qualified for.....

I used to have no sympathy or patience for great athletes who were poor students, lost their eligibilty and dropped out of sight. Now that I'm in my dotage, I realize that not everyone is cut out for college and the 'system' that insists on college for 'everyone' is inherently flawed. The Alyson Felixes of the world can CHOOSE college later if they wish, but should feel no dire need to go to college. I understand that JC eligibility rules are more lax, so hopefully some of the greats can go there, do some voc-ed (which is what we are all doing anyway) and stay eligible. I have no expertise in this area so would be interested in hearing other perspectives.

what exactly do you mean here by 'the alyson felixes of the world'?

Re: what happened to derrick florence??

Allyson Felix chose to forego all her NCAA eligibility to run track professionally. That's not for everybody, but neither is competing for a college.
