1936 Olympic Team--Smallwood

Can anyone give me any information on Robert Smallwood from the 1936 US Olympic team? I met his brother the other day, and he said that Robert was supposed to run the 800m, but got food poisoning and could not run. The USOC site lists him as DNP in the 400m. He also said that his brother had been on the winning NCAA mile relay team.

Just wondering.

Smallwood, known in T&F circles as Harold (though he was Robert Harold Smallwood), placed second in the 1936 Olympic Trials in 46.7, but was subsequently injured

He couldn't have been on NCAA-winning mile relay, though: that race wasn't added to the Championships program until 1964.

True enough that he couldn't have been on a winning NCAA mile relay team, the event not being a part of the NCAA program back then, but he was a part of the Southern Cal mile relay team in 1935 and 1936 that was probably the best in the country.

In 1936 he wasthird in the NCAA 47,1m (46,4/H) behind Archie Williams and Al Fitch.
In the regional OT (Milwaukee) he wassecond to AW. who ran 46,7m
At he AAU he won in 47,3m (Jimmy Luvalle second and AWthird, both in 47,3 !!)
At the FOT AWwon in 46,6, HS was second in 46,7, LuValle third in 46,9 and Fitch forth in 47,0
Finally at the OG he didn't start in his semi due to appendix problems !!

Aha! I see we have duelling threads. Here's what I put on the other one.

Yes, he was the 1936 national champion (here's a link to the natinals in the 400)

He was also 2nd in the Olympic Trials, and ran both the heats and quarterfinals at the Olympics, but apparently had an appendectomy before the semifinals (for which he had qualified).
