  • The SWAC

I've always had a soft spot for those small black schools in the south. Not sure why.

Stone Johnson was the first Olympic sprinter from the conference(Grambling) when he ran the 200 in Rome 1960.The following Olympics we'd see another 200 sprinter from Grambling Richard Stebbins run.He also ran in that famous 4x1 race.In 1965 Southern U's George Anderson was the top ranked sprinter in the world in 1968 Texas Southern's Jimmy Hines would win the Olympic 100 meters in WR time.In 72 it was another Flying Tiger winning an Olympic sprint medal as Robert Taylor chased Borzov to the wire.Prariw Views Fred Newhouse would win an Olympiv 400 gold and what school could match Southern when it came to 110 hurdlers.I'm talking Wilie Davenport and Rod Milburn.

The NFL was very aware of the SWAC having a ton of players coming from those schools. How about Walter Payton and Jerry Rice to mention a couple.

There was a time when relay teams from the SWAC could hang with anyone.......well those days are over, yep long gone! Actually Southern U did have a pretty fair 4x4 team a few years ago.

Jeff Williams was the last Olympian to come out of the SWAC.

Maybe it's the fact that HBCUs have the best marching bands? Led, of course, by the Florida A & M Marching 100 -- often imitated...

"More than 43,500 lucky people had the hottest ticket in town..." 43,500! ... impressive number. I saw some of those bands on TV and they do some amazing things, pretty athletic. Wonder if they are scholarship ...

... and of course the greatest himself, Bullet Bob came to us via Florida A&M ... That last leg in Tokyo should be required viewing in every HS history class in America.

Of course, if you come to the 2005 HBCU Invitational in Landover, Maryland (February 5 - 6) you can indulge your trip down memory lane.

Better yet, you can check out the new talent on the scene and sees who will make it to the next level. In the short time this indoor track & field competition has been going on, a lot of talented individuals have gone on to do some great things.

Yep that Bullet Bob anchor remains "the" most awesome display of raw speed ever witnessed for many speed freaks like myself. The only problem is that Florida A&M isn't in the SWAC. I know I know.......why not?

Hmmm...I wonder why? Could it be, some other conferences saw a little talent there and started 'accepting' those athletes?

Is there any place on the web to see that relay leg?
