  • Which U.S. miler?

Some years back a U.S. miler ran an 880 where he beat all three 800 medal winners from the Olympic Games of the previous year. Who was he and who did he beat?

Well, I don't know what year they ran the last "880"? I'd guess late 60's early 70's? Somebody who beat Snell,Juantorenna,or I'd guess it was somebody who beat US gold winner, Dave Wottle. What post-Ryan miler could do it---Marty? T.Waldrop indoors maybe?

Yes, slowcat it was Burleson in February 1961 on a grass track in New Zealand and Snell, Moens and Kerr finished behind Burleson in the same order as in the Rome Olympics. For a while there in the early 60's I thought Burleson might have a chance against Snell in the mile.

What happened to Burleson in 1964? I've heard a lot about jis accomplishments, but as far as the Olympic Games, his name never comes up.
The same as Ron Clarke from New Zealand (though I recently found out that Billy Mills upset Clarke in the 64' 10,000 meters).

He was within a couple of steps of a silver medal in a very close finish after Snell's 1.5-second margin of victory

Alan Simpson, a very talented 1500/miler, later admitted to have used stimulants[amphetamines]. Back to which U.S. miler, Burleson and his older colleague, Jim Grelle, unfortunately did not receive the exposure nor the kudos that they deserved.

What ever happened to Jim Grelle? Does anyone know where he lives now and what he is doing? Some of you might be interested to know that Jim Beatty will be in Portland, Oregon, the first weekend of December. He's presenting an award at the USATF convention. The period from 1960 to 1965 was a very interesting one for U.S. milers.
