I believe it is still Peter Snell's 1:44.3 (1962). Ralph Doubell equalized it at the Olympic Games 1968, but the electronic timing was 1.44.40.

John Walker's best is 1:44.92 set at the Commonwealth Games in 1974 (Christchurch).
