Re: Track and Field and War...
There was the movie Gallipoli (1980s, I think) that had a supposed great sprinter from Australia, but I suspect this was pure fiction.

Yes he is.
OG 1908: 2nd in SHJ (standing high jump)
OG 1908: 2nd in SLJ
OG 1912: 3rd in SHJ
OG 1912: 1st in SLJ
He also participated in the 1906 games where he reportedly studied Ray Ewry's technique. Very tall and handsome guy too.

Bill Lawson, a half miler from Missouri was also killed in Viet Nam. Wasn't German long jumper Luz Long killed in WWII? And wasn't one of the Japanese Olympic champs in the TJ also lost - or was it one of their star vaulters? I seem to recall once reading that when he was found his track shoes were in his kit.

Eric Liddell
Znamenskiy brothers
I suspect most of the "Memorial" meets other than van Damme and Prefontaine are named for war victims.
How/when did Jose Barrientos die?

Re: Track and Field and War...
Janusz Kusocinski, Olympic 10000 champs from 1932. He had a good comeback just before WWII as well, running a new NR in 1939. Alas, he was stopped short in his 1940 Olympic quest...
