Quite a surprise, I agree. But then there hasn't been too many high-profile male sprinters who were good enough to medal in both sprint relays, and the only other female doublers I could think of never got gold in both relays (Flo Jo, Torrence, etc). Great question!

Not all that surprising when you consider that there was no women's 4x4 until 1972,and not until 1984 (after the Soviet shenanigans of '80) did you get freeform substitution in the heats.
ps--Add in that 1984 was the EastBloc boycott year when the best 4x4 (and perhaps the best 4x1, sine they set the still-standing WR the next year) wasn't in the OG and while it's a for-real stat, it's one that packs a lot of baggage.
