Re: Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group

    >>make me think it will be much closer to 2:15 (maybe even>better) than to 3:15.<<

let's hope so - like honus, I prefer to remember him as the 'animal' he was (that's a compliment btw).

Herb Elliott was the smoker (althugh as I recall, Snell ended up as a promo guy for Rothman's at one point)

Re: Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group

I mentioned on another thread that Earl Fee(the canuck with the 800 65-69 age group record) just got named male athlete of the recent Masters games and got a trip to the WAF for his troubles.

As I recall, Snell competed in the Superstars open competition. As a tennis player he was perhaps a bit of a ringer. I seem to recall him being wiped out in a fall on the bicycle - someone fell in front and brought him down. At the time I felt he was cheated out of points since it wasn't he that precipitated the fall.

Re: Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group

this is conversation i believe never took place-

" hey snell great time trial that 2:36 you just ran was not bad. whata think about going to the masters champ. as an x olympic champion wouldnt it be cool to travel to the meet and get maybe 10th place."

here is a conversation much more likely-

"hey snell great time trial. that time you just ran could win the world championship, maybe a new world record to-boot mate. lets do it!"
              phsstt!

Re: Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group

A google for Snell and Rothman's turned up this entry in a Sacred Heart College (of Auckland) reunion chat board

<<In my years at SHC, I can recall running track with the team and one day, Peter Snell showed up to train with us. There we were with the future World Record holder in the mile and the Gold Medal winner in the Olympics. Guess what Mr. Snell did when he was not running...he was a sales rep for Rothman's cigarettes! He even showed up at the college that day in a car with the Rothmann's logo on the side door. >>

Shades of Liu Xiang as discussed before. Quite the site I came upon when I googled him and cigarettes:

SAW PETER IN VANCOUVER CANADA,2004//@HARRY JEROME
                    WITH WALKER&STEVE SCOTT.HE LOOKED GREAT FOR 64.

hope they run his group at milrose games ,it,ll be fun.

our local group from kentucky is heading to newyork for 5th ave.mile&our track club annual outing.8 team members are running.

the people in newyork said there will be 2-3 masters trying like hell to break 4:10 or 4 minutes.sounds like fun.

Re: Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group

I just got off the phone with Peter and he asked me to set some things straight:

He is not, in any way, making any sort of athletics comeback. 8min miles are all he manages these days, as far as running goes. He will be cheering ont he New Zealand masters runners, as well as competing in masters orienteering, a sport in which Peter plans to continue competing for sometime.

but no running comeback in any form.

                      Sorry guys.

Trackhead, could U please email me privately with any other details of your chat with Dr. Snell? Did he call you? Is he aware that the UK magazine Running Fitness jumped the gun -- suggesting a track comeback? Just curious.

Shades of Gordon Pirie here who was also quite serious about orienteering. It seems that there should be more cross over with track. Certainly in my university days we would persuade quite a few orienteers to compete in the 5000m and cross country. They were excellent runners (no surprises there of course).

                            Well, Dr. Snell!

Old Peter has entered a masters mile -- on the roads of Dunedin in his native New Zealand -- in early February, at least three NZ news outlets report.

                            See my blog for details:

i noticed it said he is doing the orienteering event too. So is he treating the masters mile a warm up event?
