Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group
I spoke with Peter today -- he said that he is hoping to run run inside four minutes twice in a row in a single mile...
I told him that, given the chatter on the boards over this subject, that his legend had not lost any luster over the decades. He replied, "Well, I think I may break that trend after this mile!"
He went off to go run on his treadmill at a comfortable 10min/mi, and said that if he finishes in a time of 7something, he will be pleased.
LOL nice update trackhead. I'm glad to see Snell has a great sense of humour.
by the way why is this thread in the 'things not track and field' category?

NZ report sez: "Snell ... has also entered the orienteering on the Saturday and Sunday before the mile."
Obviously I didn't read closely enough! So it will be a warm down. I love the four minute line.
And that speaking of those Tarverns in the woods, that reminds me. If you're ever hiking in Muir woods (near SF) don't miss the Bavarian tourist club. Its a bar literally in the woods with a deck looking out over the redwoods.

Shades of Gordon Pirie here who was also quite serious about orienteering. It seems that there should be more cross over with track. Certainly in my university days we would persuade quite a few orienteers to compete in the 5000m and cross country. They were excellent runners (no surprises there of course).
What really slows you down in orienteering are all those damn taverns along the way.

Trackhead, could U please email me privately with any other details of your chat with Dr. Snell? Did he call you? Is he aware that the UK magazine Running Fitness jumped the gun -- suggesting a track comeback? Just curious.
Re: Peter Snell planning masters comeback in M65 group
I just got off the phone with Peter and he asked me to set some things straight:
He is not, in any way, making any sort of athletics comeback. 8min miles are all he manages these days, as far as running goes. He will be cheering ont he New Zealand masters runners, as well as competing in masters orienteering, a sport in which Peter plans to continue competing for sometime.
