  • Best Hangover Cure?

It is obvious from the various posts around here that just about everyone but tafnut occasionally (or more often) imbibes in sprits a bit stronger than milk or root beer. As such, many posters probably have had the pleasure of a hangover.

The question before the house: what hangover cure(s) have you found most effective.

Mine: back in the pre-bad-hammy days I was pleasantly surprised to find that an eight-mile run in Strawberry Canyon above Cal Berkeley did the trick. (I don’t think you have to come out here to run on the same trail to have the same general effect.) I would have passed on the run (‘cause, as some may know, hangovers kind of make you feel bad), but I had pre-arranged to meet an old high-school buddy there and had no way to contact him to cancel. Felt like Hell for the first mile or so, and then the fog began to clear. Felt great by the end.

Breakfast tacos. Although I understand that is a concept not widely understood outside of Texas. (Basically, eggs and your choice of other ingredients wrapped in a torilla.) Even better: migas. That's a dish of fried corn tortilla strips mixed with eggs, cheese, onions, tomatoes, and serrano peppers. For a dollar extra you can have chorizo sausage added. Highly recommended.

I am told nothing works better than menudo (for those of you not familiar with Southwestern culture, that translates to intestine soup). However, I haven't worked up the nerve to find out. I'm planning on throwing a hum-dinger of a birthday party for my wife tonight, so maybe I'll have occasion to try it tomorrow morning.

OK, you're getting it for that - the True Story of the time tafnut not only drank (gasp!), but got drunk (double gasp!). And . . . as an added benefit, it is apropos here.

So it's 1983, and me and the boys (the 12-man crew of a P-3 anti-submarine warfare aircraft) have been flying our heinies (no, not the beer, our fannies) off, with round-the clock missions (which from brief to debrief is 12 hours!) in the Azores. We're all exhausted and the CO (Commanding Officer) volunteers my crew to run up to Iceland and back to get his girlfriend, i.e., NOT his wife (and oh yes, he was married) a new stereo. [long story why the Keflavik, Iceland Navy Exchange has the best selection and prices on stereo - but, c'mon, what else is there to do there?] So we don't want to go, but how do disobey the order? We get tafnut (who NEVER drinks) so drunk, we can't be on the flight schedule the next day (the theory is that this is such an odd anomaly, that the CO will have to see we're in no shape to fly).

But the problem is that LCDR Tafnut can NOT abide any kind of drink, so how do we accomplish this? Vodka and grenadine! The grenadine masks the nasty vodka taste and sure enough tafnut downs 8 8-ounce glasses of the stuff! He is WASTED! The CO strolls into the Officers Club bar at 11pm, only to see tafnut standing at a pinball table in his underwear, flight suit draped around his ankles. There are pretty nurses standing on either side of him, cheering mightily for he has 8 free balls to play and he's nearing the table record [let's keep our focus here, I know the image is disturbing and fraught with all sorts of entendres). The CO demands to know what's going on and tafnut turns to his CO and blows about 24 oz of red vodka at the CO. tafnut remembers very little of what happened next except to hear the phrase, "Crew 11 will report at 0700 for the annual Physical Readiness Test." The test is pushups, situps, and a 1.5 mile run.

The next day at 0730, the crew has completed all portions of the PRT (again - tafnut only remembers bits and pieces of this) except the 1.5 run. What tafnut does remember is the unacceptable prospect of not running at least a 8:20, which is the slowest time he has ever run and he is NOT going to let himself or anyone else down NOW! But the good news is that tafnut is clearly STILL DRUNK! And indeed, in this 'painless' state, tafnut PRs with an 8:05 (lifetime PR)!!

The CO is stony-faced and sends the crew home for the day, restricted to base for 48 hours. When tafnut reawoke that night there were zero after-effects!

The moral of the story - to avoid hangovers, stay drunk for as long as possible, then do a hard run, and then sleep it off. Worked for me!

After a night of drinking stop at a Diner get "Scramble three with Bacon and Sausage , homefries well ,double order of well buttered Rye lightly toasted,Two large chocolate malts w/extra malt and a raw egg, coffee , and leave the pitcher of ice water".At this point a good waiter would say"Extra Grease on the homefries(?)"
Truth.............. nothing works but lots of water and lots of time.

there are basically 2 catagories. the healthy recovery and the unhealthy recovery.

heathly recovery- if you can, before bed, 3 asprin and all the water you can drink. drink more water when you get up to pee. in the mornin. v8 juice, bacon and eggs. more water, more asprin. go back to bed. get up go for run-shower.

unhealthy recovery- i once flew from east coast to west coast drinking and playing music till 9 am my time. maybe 24 beers in 24 hours. woke up after 3 hours. couldnt sleep. someone said " hey man are you alright, you look green" 2 double , extra spicy bloody marys later and i felt like a million dollars!
            phsstt!

I agree! Several aspirin and three multivitamins before bed. Maybe even a protein shake. Works everytime, and if I am still feeling a little heavy the next day, I think about how really bad I would be feeling had I not taken them!

Since a hangover is in essence a combination of alcohol withdrawal and fasting, Squack's "unhealthy recovery" is the most physiological. The trouble with it is that if one continues......

Big, fat, tasty mexican burrito filled with yellow rice, black beans, tomatos, onions, garlic, white cheese and peppar salad before you head home from town.

Two old running buddies of mine stayed out all night in SF 12 years ago -- by all night, I mean until 05.00. Drank, carried on and pushed themselves way past their limits. THEN ran the 6-mile Wharf-to-Wharf run in Santa Cruz, CA three hours later (including 1 hour of travel time between SF and SC). One of them ran 29.30 and the other 29.46... I don:t think they felt the pain... have no idea how the heck they made it that far with nothing but booze and alcohol running through their veins.

I had a similarly dumb experience ... ran a mile at an all-comers one summer later after being out until 04.15 and having a "good" night out, put mildy. Awoke at 08.00, jogged 3,4 km to the track where the races were being contested at 08.30, literally jumped out of my sweats and stepped onto the track without any spikes, and placed 2:nd by 0,13 seconds to a previous top-5 all-time USA steeplechaser.

Should:ve, would:ve, could:ve, but didn:t do any more or any less. What saved me was the huge, tasty burrito at 03.15.

WARNING: Kids, don:t try this stupid stuff at home - or any beer miles, really.

I like the occasional drink (no beer-yuk!) but I have never been drunk.

Don't know many people who can say that (including my own grown children) but I have seen drunk people and it does not look like fun. :P
Funny- squackee you are very prominent on alcohol threads!!!

This sounds like someone who only equates intoxicated with Girls Gone Wild, Mardis Gras-type drinking. There's a huge difference between the frat boy or Hell's Angels fall-down drunk and the sitting with your friends, marinating, and enjoying good conversation/food/dancing kind of drunk. The latter, I can assure you, can be a very nice feeling.

Back to the topic at hand, however. When I'm feeling mature and responsible, I down a glass of H2O following every beer or glass of wine. The dizzy drunkeness onset seems to be delayed or prevented, and it certainly takes care of the hydration problem. Also, by staying on top of the hydration during the night, I'm not struggling as much to pound quarts of water on a queazy stomach later that night or the next morning.
