  • Favorite Vacation Spot Ever?

(clearly inspired by epelle's "common vacation" thread)

A 4-way tie for the top spot (in order of most recently enjoyed):

    •Banff/Lake Louise
    •Norway's Westland (aka fjords)
    •Bernese Oberland
    •South Island of New Zealand

(country most want to retire to: NZ)

That's kinda funny. The only one I've been to on your list was Banff/Lake Louise, and I was way disappointed. Had a much better time up the road in Jasper.

Places I’ve been to that I want to go back to (not much of a world traveler here):

    New York
    Chicago
    New Orleans
    Boston
    Scottsdale
    Jasper
    Vegas – anytime

Place I would not go back to no matter how much you paid me:

    Atlanta

(Well, OK, you could get generous and I would return, but that ain’t likely.)

Lots of places I’d like to go that I have not been to.

The recliner in my den, with CBC WC or Olympic coverage on.

I think I wuld probably enjoy the same experience even more in England watching Eurosport. 8)

Really my fav place so far has been Greece with Kauai not far behind.

bad hammy-I agree about Lake Louise- there are more beautiful places in the Rockies but you have to hike (heavens) a mile or so off the "beaten" path to get to them.

          mojo,

We'd love to go to Greece. mrs. hammy loves island trips, so I've spent two weeks on Kauai and two on Maui. My problem (well, one of my problems  ) is that the mosquitoes love me too much. Makes those lush, tropical trips a bit of a pain.

I've been to all the islands except Molokai and for me none came close to kauai. So lush and less touristy. Damn expensive though!

I hear if you slather mashed potatoes over the bites the itching goes away.
I need to take you two camping. No need for the mosquito zapper!

Kauai is all of those, but if you REALLY want lush, less touristy Hawaii, try the one week we spent in a one-room hut on a ten-acre farm in Hana (on Maui). If you want lush, less touristy (and lots of mosquitoes), Hana is hard to beat.

Our next Hawaiian vacation (when she can talk mosquito boy into it) will be the big island. I want some volcano action . . .

did 2 weeks on Big Island last fall.... inrcredible (retiring to Waimea not a bad idea either... might even get sprint PRs at altitude :-)

But doesn't hold a candle to my other four. Did Jasper as well as Lake Louise this fall, and while it's a better place to live--reduced tourosity--the sheer physical beauty of the LL area wins.

                        Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal

I didn't notice the winds on Maui – you may have been there at a bad time. What I did notice on Kauai was that I was promised by mrs. hammy that we were visiting when the ‘trade winds’ were going to keep everything dry and cool. Muggy and hot as hell is what it was for two weeks. No winds, just hot, humid and mosquitoes.

Have to agree with GH that Lake Louise is stunning. I had a great time canoeing around the lake with a hydrophobic buddy who was afraid to look in the water after I told him how deep it was

                              Other favorite "foreign" vacation spots:
                              Bjarnum, SWE
                              Nesbyen, NOR
                              Grasse, FRA

                              Snowdonia in Wales

Closer to home -- first trip to Yellowstone last year and it blew me away. Amazing scenery, fascinating wildlife. Grand Tetons were magnificent. Yosemite is an all-time favorite, too. And for good measure, Big Bend in far West Texas if you relish solitude with a view!
