i ran a hard 10 k race the day before we left and i was snokeling just off shore when i got a horrible cramp in my calf from the race. i could straighten it but couldnt put any weight on it cause i was floating. i made my way to shore in a panic and my antics there most have looked pretty funny to the tourists.phsstt!

Favorite vacation spot so far, has been US Virgin Islands. Good food, not very expensive, perfect beaches. The wife and I have actually begun talking about retiring there, at least for a few years.
I made a business trip to Athens a couple of years back and I am hoping to take a vacation split between there and the Aegean Islands in the future.

I've been to two of gh's four faves--Banff/Lake Louise and the South Island of NZ and both would be on my short list as well. I think I prefer the Canadian Rockies, which have to be seen to be believed. I share gh's view that Louise beats Jasper, but much of the drive from one to the other is spectacular.
I agree with gm's opinion of Yellowstone and the Tetons. That's another wonderful part of the world. There is a place just off the main road in Yellowstone on the East side of the park that has probably the single most breathtaking vista that I've ever seen.
I've never been to Yosemite, although I've flown over it. It's on my long list of places I'd like to go someday before I run out of somedays.
On the other side of the coin, while I've been to Hawaii, I'm not eager to return. I enjoy lying on a beach as much as anyone, but for me, one nice stretch of sand is pretty much like any other. I enjoy the warmth and the sound of the ocean. Whether it's Hawaii or the Caribbean, when I'm on an island, I rarely see any of the island other than the drive to and from the airport. I'm there for the rest.
For a combination of relaxation and scenery, there's nothing quite like a lake surrounded by hills or mountains. I can think of any number of them, both in the US and in Europe, that I've enjoyed. There are zillions of them in the US--no need to pick one.

We lived at the edge of the Rockies for 8 years- had a spectacular view of them from our house. My DH and I have hiked and camped extensivley around that area- couldn't agree more with you.

re Switzerland:
Elaborating on a prior brief mention, I have ridden through parts of Switzerland 3 different years on my bicycle. Once ( 1985) coming over from Liechtenstein(sp?) then over Klausen Pass; then across Lake Lucerne to Lucerne ( side trip via train from Lucerne up to and from Engleberg and Mt. Titlis ) and then up and fly out from the Big Z. 2nd trip ( 1989) up from Milan to Lugano over St. Gotthard Pass, then up via Lucerne and up to Basel, final stop a week later in Amsterdam. Lastly (1991) up out of Merano area of Italy, then up through Chur via Fluela Pass and then to Zurich.
It's a beautiful country but unless on a bike, and camping like I was, you will need your wallet big time. I would love to go back with my wife and visit again via car and/or train.

Mismaloya, Mexico, 1968, just before the Olympics... half an hour south of Puerto Vallarta on the old, unpaved road. A perfect little cove on the tropical Pacific with nothing and no one to interrupt camping under the trees at the edge of the beach and a tiny shanty of a store with ice, beer, bread and fruit a couple hundred yards away. It was perfect. NOW, I am told, there is an expensive, nine-story destination resort hotel/spa squatting in the middle of the bay!
Here is a great place, though: Capitan Suizo Hotel, on the beach at Tamarindo, Costa Rica! Only 40 rooms but first class service, location, grounds and food!
