  • UCHealth did 10,000 vaccinations last weekend at Coors Field in Denver. Our "rival" health care system, Centura, is doing 4500 this weekend at the World Arena here in Colorado Springs.

The infrastructure is falling into place. The rate-limiting step is really becoming the volume of the supply.

And as mentioned on another thread, Mrs Bambam and myself got our 2nd vaccination earlier today up in Durham, NC. Drive back to Hilton Head this afternoon. Now fully vaccinated and it is a very good feeling. Before Conor Dary comes after me we do realize it is 10-14 days until the full protection occurs so we will continue to be careful. But I warned Mrs Bambam that in about 2 weeks we are going out to dinner every night for a week.

          • Headline - Why Opening Restaurants Is Exactly What the Coronavirus Wants Us to Do

Good read and, I would think, a bit scary for those who plan to go out for dinner (which I do not).

I haven't sat down in a restaurant since the cases shot up in the US last March. It baffles me that so many people still think the mundane experience of sitting inside an indoor restaurant is worth the risk of death or hospitalization. Yes, you gotta eat, but that's what take-out is for.

But, as I understand it (and please do correct me if I'm wrong; I've read up on it as much as possible, since I will be in your position in 2 weeks),

                a. You could still carry it and spread to others.
                b. You could be in the 5% that the vax is NOT effective for.

Both are correct but if we are going to live our lives like that, we might just as well shut down the world for the rest of our lives, which a) is not gonna happen, and b) I don't wanna live like that.

As Fauci has said several times, this will be endemic and we will learn to live with it. Its not like we have to get down to 0 cases and no deaths - although that would be ideal, but unlikely. We need to get it to the level of a seasonal flu, which we have lived with for decades and do not shut the world down for that.

It doesn't mean shutting down for the rest of our lives. Deaths and hospitalizations are likely to drop far below current levels by summer or fall. But getting out there and spreading it will only prolong the time it takes to bring the cases and deaths down like that.

Yes, but it's not down to that level yet.

It's looking like we can return to 'normal' (albeit forever altered in business, education, etc..) by the end of summer, so we will wait till then to travel and hobnob. We already have found a few favorite restaurants that properly distance and mask, so we're OK on the enetratinment front. The one thing that will irrevocably change is movie-going. If we go at all, it would only be to see major block-busters (007!!) in IMAX.

I'm not gonna get out there and spread it. 1) there is only a 5% chance of getting the virus to begin with, 2) we will follow mask and social distance guidelines, 3) all the expert opinions I've seen have said that although this is not considered a sterilizing vaccine, they all feel that the risk of transmission from anybody who has been fully vaccinated will be much lower - no numbers on it but they all concurred on that in the study I saw.

                        • I don't begrudge anyone who is masked and distanced doin' what they wanna!

I would wait until I see hard data on the transmission risk rather than relying on someone's "feeling." But that's just me.

It's my understanding that even if you're in that unlucky 5%, the likelihood of you having severe illness is greatly diminished, not to mention hospitalization or death.
