A vaccine safety monitoring system in late November picked up a signal that the updated Pfizer coronavirus vaccine booster was possibly linked to an increased risk of strokes in people 65 and older. But a deep dive into several large databases failed to confirm the preliminary information, leading federal health officials to conclude the risk is extremely low — and probably nonexistent, those officials said Friday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose system detected the early signal, and the Food and Drug Administration, which also assesses vaccine safety, have decided there is no need to change the recommendation that everyone 6 months and older should stay up to date with their coronavirus vaccinations, including those 5 and older who are eligible for the updated booster,according to agency officials who discussed the situation on background.

Like they did for excess deaths (which lined up closely with the reported COVID death statistics in the US), an analysis of excess hospitalizations compared to prior years would provide a good indicator of how many were because of COVID and not just with COVID.Originally posted by NotDutra5 View PostComment

The bivalent COVID-19 booster targeting BA.4/5 showed high levels of protection against COVID-19 hospitalization in older adults, an observational cohort study out of Israel showed.
According to the latest CDC dataopens in a new tab or window, 39% of individuals 65 and older in the U.S. have received a dose of Pfizer or Moderna's bivalent vaccine, which were authorized by the FDAopens in a new tab or window in late August. An earlier report by the CDCopens in a new tab or window showed a vaccine effectiveness of 73-84% against COVID-19 hospitalization in the U.S. with the bivalent boosters, though data on protection against death were not available.

The Elko County Board of Health is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss and consider placing a moratorium on COVID-19 and flu vaccines in the county.
The board also will consider discontinuing local advertising for COVID-19 and flu vaccines, pending “further investigation and results of the Florida Supreme Court case to investigate the wrong doing related to COVID-19 vaccines,” the agenda says.
In December, Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis requested that the Florida Supreme Court convene a grand jury to investigate any possible side effects of COVID-19 vaccines and to get more information from pharmaceutical companies.

Members of the Republican Executive Party of Lee County are calling on Governor DeSantis to “ban the jab” in a new proposed resolution.
The resolution will be voted on this week. The resolution calls for DeSantis to ban the sale and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
WINK News spoke with Tara Jenner, the vice chair of the Lee County Republican Party, about the resolution.
“There is a feeling that it is a ‘bioweapon,'” Jenner said.
At least among the members of the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Lee County.
