  • So lonewolf, did you ever imagine you'd ever see a situation like we've found ourselves in right now? I sure didn't.
Just one example is a year when all the sports histories will just have an asterisk where annual data should be??!!
Even during the WWs, we still had sports seasons!

    • I read that the virus can spread from people's mouths simply from speaking. So it's curious today in watching our Congress folk Interviewing Dr. Bright with their masks off, and even curiouser to see Dr. Bright do likewise (not his lawyer, though).
A new study shows that a person talking loudly can emit tiny droplets that carry the novel coronavirus, which can then float for several minutes …

Nope, never anticipated such a thing but I don't see what that has to do with price of crude oil,a result of imbalance of supply/demand exacerbated by perfect storm of excessive production coincident with virus induced reduction consumption.. A huge sector of US and world economy and millions of jobs are adversely affect. I don't see it as an occasion to rejoice or punish Big Oil.

That's because the war was elsewhere....Europe didn't have any sports....

It doesn't! Did you think I was being snarky? Shame on you!
I meant it as a point of curiosity, hearing from a person of your experience, reflecting on the weird turn of events we've found ourselves in!

Ok, I may be hypersensitive in defending the oil bizz from criticism by people who do not understand that "Big Oil" is not an evil organism. It is millions of people (a few of whom are admittedly, as in any industry, overpaid) providing an, as yet, irreplaceable product, supporting not only those directly employed by oil companies but also a myriad of manufacturing and service companies and other goods and services required for all segments of society to live comfortable lives. I understand the general public likes low gasoline prices resulting from lower well head prices but they need to reflect that most people who have jobs can afford gasoline at $3.00/gallon but many will lose those jobs at $1.00/gallon.

There are only a handful of companies comprising Big Oil. There are thousands of small companies, independents and related dependent service companies comprising Little Oil, whose combined assets exceed Big Oil but who cannot individually weather a prolonged industry recession.

As to the weird turn of events, I did not expect the disastrous intersection of technology success and a pandemic but am not completely surprised. We has a warm up/rehearsal in 2008 and 2014 and knew the world had a pending glut of oil due to the Russia vs Saudi stand off and, unknown to general public, thousands of drilled but uncompleted wells in the US that have to pay for themselves eventually.

The 2008 swoon was more attributable to the financial industry but oil biz suffered along with every one else.

In 2014 when oil prices abruptly fell from $100/bbl to $26/bbl, operators found themselves paying for wells drilled at costs consistent with $100 oil out of revenue from $26 oil. Many never paid out. There was a slow increase to $50-$60 oil briefly that made horizontal drilling and some marginal vertical wells profitable again but only after massive layoffs and business failures. Curiously, many non-industry related service companies that imposed a fuel surcharge during the $100 era never removed them. Tens of thousands laid off in 2014 have not been able to return to the industry.

Fortunes are lost as well as made in the oil bizz. Historically, about 90% of "wildcat" exploratory wells and 50% of all wells are "dry holes". Many completed wells are never profitable.

We keep trying. Love us or hate us, ya still need the oil bizz.

              Thus spake, Lone Wolf.

              • WTF? ??? This is a first. After 15 years on the forum, I just had an innocuous post blocked as spam pending approval by moderator. The post required a long time to compose and does not violate any political, religious or sexual taboos. ..I am gobsmacked..

Did you edit it multiple times after you'd posted?

This is what I did before the time my post was marked for moderation. I missed multiple errors, so I edited and saved 2 or 3 times in quick succession and vBulletin said "Nope, don't like that."

There was no content issue and I don't think there were even any links, so I'm pretty sure it was just the multiple posts in a short time.

I'm sure Fanny Blankers-Koen set some records during the war even though her country was occupied by the Nazis.

I've had a similar experience. I think I got around it one time by copying my final clean version, waiting a few minutes, and then going back in and posting it as a new post.
