It’s the paradox of a pandemic that has crushed the U.S. economy: 12.9 million lost jobs and a dangerous rash of businesses closing, yet the personal finances of many Americans have remained strong — and in some ways have even improved.

A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that 45% of Americans say they’re setting aside more money than usual. Twenty-six percent are paying down debt faster than they were before the coronavirus pandemic. In total, about half of Americans say they’ve either saved more or paid down debt since the outbreak began.

If you still have the same job and the same income, you definitely have more money to save. As the article says, you don't spend as much on traveling or eating out. I haven't been outside of my county, and have not eaten at a dine-in restaurant since early March. On top of that, I got the extra $1200 from the government.

And the economy won't recover unless we get the virus under control, because we don't have enough things to spend our money on.

Florida's movie theaters opened this week. They are operating at 30% capacity. I've already booked my IMAX tickets for next Monday's advance showing of my most anticipated movie since 2017 (Dunkirk). We'll still wear our masks.

                • I think we should be finding out soon if a large campus like Alabama can survive 1000+ students enrolling/returning to school and get away with it. If the kids aren't being hospitalized maybe they can and that seems like their intent. Will the semester at Tuscaloosa continue with roughly a 10% rate?

                  • I guess this will be a real life experiment to see if they can keep the outbreak largely contained to campus, or if this will ripple throughout the community.

No American politician would ever have the nerve to suggest such a draconian law.

                      • Nor can I imagine that any American court would impose such a harsh punishment under this woman's circumstances.

                              • OK, this obviously is not a major sporting event, so it's a bit off-topic. But I was delighted to read about a race that did take place recently. It was a naked 5K.

Headline - In a Naked Pandemic Race, You Can Leave Your Hat On

Sub-headline - When we can’t go outside without covering our faces, there’s a special appeal in the opportunity to uncover everything else.

                                Lede:

In a lot of ways, the 5K I ran on Saturday was like any other race: The tall, skinny guys zipped out front, fast. Spectators rang cowbells. I heard the “Rocky” theme twice along the course.

Except the spectators were naked. And I was, too.

That’s because the race was the Bouncing Buns Clothing Optional 5K, held at the Sunny Rest Resort, a nudist resort in Palmerton, Pa.
