So here's my Syd Osterhout history story - med school 1984-85 microbiology class - Syd Osterhout starts talking....and he talks so frickin' rapidly that it is pure fantasy to think you can keep up with his lecture, take meaningful notes, etc, and therefore it's anyone's guess as to what he actually said about masks. Weekend job must have been as an auctioneer.

Many still have not taken account of the toll the yearly influenza had on us.
No. A week after I thought I was over it and my runs told me I wasn't yes. Many months...absolutely not.

I love Syd Osterhout. When I was on tour, struggling in my last season, I considered med school and while on the West Coast went and talked to the deans at UCLA and UCSD while I was in those towns. Both told me not to bother - I had no chance with my undergrad grades. Back on the east coast I went into to talk to Osterhout, who was Dean of Admissions, and he said I had a good chance and this meeting would count as my interview. I got in a couple months later, thanx to him.

        • I've had pneumonia twice in my adult life, once in 1990 when I was a chief resident. I was sick for about a month before I gave in and went to a doctor, and it took me months to recover, even though I was in my 30s and in pretty good shape until then. About 6 weeks after getting out of the hospital, I tried running, figuring it was time to get back in shape, and I made it about 300 yards before I was keeled over, gasping for breath. Knocked the crap out of me.

          • My youngest daughter opted for her only remaining son at home to online his sophomore year HS. She has been "helping" him and says the workload is overwhelming and the classes are more difficult than her Masters in Geology/Geophysics. Her biggest concern is lack of peer interaction and "mommy burnout".

            • I have had head colds and a snotty nose but I don't think I have ever had pneumonia or the "flu". I do recall being fatigued for a week after an undiagnosed three-day bout of diarrhea one time.

              • Half my grandkids are in virtual school and the other half actually go to school. The real-school ones are thriving and the at-home ones are not. I have mixed feelings about the ones going to school, but it's hard to argue with their enthusiasm for school and the others' ennui with it.

I believe I've had the flu once or twice (fever, body aches, sore throat, congestion, etc.) but I didn't have any long-lasting affects after I got over it.

                    • I think it can also be related to the well documented endothelial damage the virus does, but it'll all be conjecture until more time is devoted to the phenomenon and more study is properly done.

Not necessarily at all. Many people get asymptomatic covid. Their immune systems take care of it silently. Too often it is the immune system killing off the patient in it's attempt to kill off the virus. Special ops gone rogue.
