In addition, in most fabrics the space between fibers will be smaller than the width of each fiber, so in a multi-layer mask the fibers of the second or third layer can cover most of the gaps exposed in the first layer.

      • Covid-19 is disproportionately killing minorities – including young people of colour. Black, Hispanic and American Indian/Alaska Native youth constitute only 41% of the under-21 US population but comprise about 75% of all pediatric Covid-19 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I'm not sure that is even necessary, though it may improve performance. Of course there are two competing goals, 1) flow rate and 2) capture rate at a given particle size. These kinds of filters need multiple layers of fibers in a random or regular lattice that forces the particles to collide with the sticky fibers. The " sticky" part is necessary.

If the total for the year stays below 20,000, that would be the first time since 1976. (The annual number peaked at 34,427 in 2007, and has been declining. There were 20.169 suicides in Japan last year.) However, the number usually goes up significantly in December.

              • Swedish government sidelines epidemiologist who steered country's no lockdown experiment as deaths rise

The high-profile epidemiologist who led Sweden's no lock-down strategy in the spring appears to be being sidelined by the government after his prediction that greater immunity would mean a lighter second wave proved badly wrong.

The high-profile epidemiologist who led Sweden's no lock-down strategy in the spring appears to be being sidelined by the government after his prediction that greater immunity would mean a lighter second wave proved badly wrong. Anders Tegnell's biweekly press conference was on Thursday pushed into the shade by an overlapping press conference fronted by Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, where new scenarios prepared by the Public Health Agency were announced. "There's certainly a split, and I'm pretty sure that many in the government have rather lost faith in the Public Health Agency," said Nicholas Aylott, an associate politics professor at Stockholm's Södertorn University. "By some counts, we've now got exactly the same level of spread of the virus that we had in the spring, and that's about as clear a refutation of Tegnell's strategy as you could wish for." Dr Tegnell has always insisted that his Public Health Agency has never pursued a herd immunity strategy, but he repeatedly suggested in the summer that his counterparts in Norway, Finland and Denmark would face a tougher task over the winter because of lower levels of immunity in their populations. This month, though, the number of deaths in Sweden has again begun to soar above that of its Nordic neighbours, with 630 deaths so far registered as a result of Covid-19. That is about ten times the per capita death rate in Norway -- where just 30 Covid-19 deaths were registered between October 28th and November 25th.

Noem blames surge in cases on testing as hospitals fill

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Tuesday blamed South Dakota’s recent surge in coronavirus cases on an increase in testing, even as the state saw a new high in the number of people hospitalized by the virus.

There are currently no open general-care hospital beds in the southeastern part of the state, which contains the two largest hospitals, according to the Department of Health. Hospitals are dealing with both an increase in COVID-19 patients and people needing other medical care. The hospitals in Sioux Falls do have about 41% of their Intensive Care Units available.

The Republican governor did not explain how an increase in hospitalizations would be connected to an increase in testing.

Yesterday (Sunday after Thanksgiving) I went and did a long bike ride in the North Georgia mountains. I expected to be stuck in traffic heading back into Atlanta at 5PM. I was not. Fastest I've ever gotten from B to A for that drive.

                    • Santa Clara County (think Silicon Valley) has imposed a 3-week ban on all contact sports, including practice. And has instituted a rule that if you come into the county from farther than 150M away it's a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

So the 49ers are pulling up stakes (probably Arizona) and spending at least 3 weeks living somewhere else.

Obviously, Stanford and San José State don't have that option.

When they get back from the UW game Saturday, will they be in quarantine at school for 2 weeks??!! They have a home game with OreSt in that time. The whole team must be on-line learning.

I find that absurd. So NO ONE will die of Covid if they get that vaccine? Impossible.

                          • from an opinion column this morning in SF Chron.....

<<The crazed insistence on playing sports as the pandemic surges looks stranger and stranger. At UCLA, registered nurses protested the fact that the athletic department conducted 1,248 tests in a single week but health care workers at the university hospitals have been denied testing. National Nurses United, the nation’s largest RN union, released a survey of more than 15,000 members: Two-thirds reported never having been tested. Yet, the NFL is administering about 40,000 tests every two weeks.

Do you think our priorities might be a bit skewed? The 49ers are paying the price for a county trying to do the right thing.>>

So how do they plan to enforce this? Are we allowed to drive through the County on 280 or 101? What about folks who fly into San jose or drive into Santa Clara County after flying into SFO or Oakland? Just wondering.

Indoor HS and Youth Sports are banned from this Friday until at least January 2nd.
