  • Vegas Mayor: "we offer to be a control group" to see how many people die without social distancing.
Cool. Maybe we can put a mass grave out by Art Bell's house.

my word for the day: I don't believe I've ever come across "preprint" before.

Preprints have been a thing in academics forever -- it refers to an unrefereed paper. They didn't used to be such a big deal, because they were generally sent to very few places in the world (e.g. select departments at other universities) and not many people saw them before it appeared in a journal. That all changed in the early 90s when Physics lead the way by introducing arXiv.org ("the archive"), an online repository for preprints (now called 'eprints') , which has become the first stop for anyone looking for a paper on a given topic. The vast majority of the papers are unreviewed at the time of posting, so there's a (rarely heeded) caveat emptor surrounding it.

When I did my M.Sc. thesis defense in 1995, one of the committee members was aghast that over a third of my references were from arXiv and thus un-peer reviewed. We assured him it wasn't really a big deal.

That is so on the nose. We've all heard these hysterical contradictions ourselves.
It's scariest/silliest when the doctors contradict each other. If they don't know, how the heck are we supposed to??!!

                      • That's really stupid ....and a real disservice to those trying to understand this epidemic....if you think that's on the nose and the best on our approaches what can I say.....rather ignorant of what is really going on....

I have a nephew in his 20s working as a RN on an ICU coronavirus ward in Boston who describes it as hell and I find this rather insulting to make a joke of it....it made me ill watching it....

To quote Ronnie, 'there you go again.'
Do you really not get that yours is not the only perspective? I found that video a perfect satire on all the conflicting messages that the 'experts' are giving us.

Excuse me, but now I have to go inject some disinfectant and open up my insides to some UV light.
