    • US Open men's match delayed due to health concerns raised by New York department of health

NEW YORK — What happens when a Grand Slam tennis match is supposed to start and neither player shows up?

In this virus-riddled world, if you thought it might have something to do with COVID-19, you would be absolutely right.

Supposedly, according to the ESPN telecast of the U.S.Open, Djokavic was on the phone got a couple hours trying to reach Governor Cuomo to get him to intercede with the health officials.

        • Novak just got defaulted out of the U.S. Open. He was angry after falling behind Pablo Carreno Busta 6-5 in the 1st set. He struck a ball angrily behind him. Unfortunately, it struck a female linesperson in the neck. She was treated for several minutes. He did not intentionally try to hit her, but the decision to throw him out was the correct one. A few minutes earlier he had done the same thing, narrowly missing a cameraman.
When he was a teenager, Denis Shapovalov was defaulted (and fined and suspended) for hitting a ball in anger that accidentally struck the umpire in the eye. Whether Djokovic will similarly be suspended is up in the air, but being #1 may have its advantages. Or maybe not. He will undoubtedly be fined a significant amount.

Djokovic loses all ranking points from the US Open, all prize money from the US Open, and is fined $10,000. He also skipped the mandatory press conference for which the fine is $20,000. The last player to hit an official with a ball in anger was Denis Shapovalov, who was similarly defaulted and fined, but also was suspended from the tour for a period of time - not exactly sure how long. Joker also hit a ball in anger much harder only a few minutes before this occurred, and I was amazed he was not given a code violation for that, but that may also contribute to any discussion of a suspension.

              • 1. If he's suspended for even a short time, that could prevent him from competing at French Open, which starts 3 weeks from today.

                2. As for losing all ranking points from U.S. Open, I'm sure he will lose the points for this year's tournament. But its unclear whether he would lose last year's 180 points. They have a special COVID-19 revamping of the rankings, which gives players the higher point total of the 2 years, for all tournaments up to the 2021 Indian Wells.

                3. Novak earlier fell, hurt his shoulder, got medical treatment. He was obviously hindered when he lost his serve to go down 6-5 to Carreno Busta. The injury may have been the catalyst for hitting the ball angrily behind him (the earlier incident bambam mentioned occurred before the fall). But, because of the injury, Novak may well have lost the match anyway.

                • Here is another news actually related to Covid.

US Open players pulled from tournament after contact with COVID-positive player

The top-seeded women's doubles team has been pulled from competition at the U.S. Open after one of the players came in contact with a third player who tested positive for COVID-19, tournament organizers announced Saturday.

That and seeing the set slip away; he had 3 break points/set points on Carreno Busta's serve at 4-5, 0-40, and on the first set point Carreno Busta seemed to shoot long but it was actually in by millimetres. Between that and the injury, no surprise he was in a foul mood; but of course, that doesn't excuse what happened.

                    • Only conjecture that he would have lost the match. I've seen him (and Nadal/Federer/Serena) come back from situations they were "destined" to lose. That's why they're all-time greats.

                          • In baseball news, a tight pitchers' duel was decided in a nail-biting 29-9 win by the Braves over the Marlins.
The Braves only batted for 8 innings . . . or they still might be there.

                            • The Houston Rockets' Danuel House Jr. is facing a 10-day quarantine for violating the NBA's COVID-19 protocol by allowing a female tester into his hotel room. I knew expecting young healthy red-blooded athletes to go celibate for 2-3 months would be an issue but I wrongly assumed that any female workers who were in the bubble were fair game, but apparently not.

Not sure if that was any worse than this.
