  • Eric Weisberg, R.I.P.

Print version of N.Y. Times today reports the passing of banjo player extraordinaire Eric Weisberg, best known for "Dueling Banjoes" on the sound track of the movie "Deliverance." I first heard of him at a concert at Brooklyn College when I was in high school, where he performed with the folk group "The Tarriers." Marshall Brickman, a man of many talents (later wrote for the tonite show as well as a screenwriter with Woody Allen) was with the group when I saw them. (Alan Arkin was an original member of the group but was no longer with it.) He'd also been with the Greenbriar Boys. Banjo, guitar, mandolin, he played them all, and was a studio musician for many including, of course Dylan. Surprised to find that he also played on Billy Joel's "Piano Man" album.

I had not heard this. Thanks for sharing. It is truly astonishing how a handful of exceptionally talented musicians seem to pop up with the stars from time to time.
