Florida on Sunday reported a record 15,300 new coronavirus cases, the most by any state in a single day since the pandemic reached the United States.

It shattered the previous highs of 11,694 reported by California last week and 11,571 reported by New York on April 15.

Florida is set to hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville next month and has ordered schools to reopen five days a week.
I am beyond exasperated by my adopted state. Everyone I know is in shutdown, but apparently I don't know enough people!
The brazen stupidity of my statemates is astonishing. Even if they don't care about themselves, they need to help protect OTHERS!
The effects of a polarized electorate seems to be the underlying cause, but I thought that was everywhere in the USA.

      • You folks (collectively) are letting Disney World open while the state goes down in covid flames, just in time for the GOP convention. This is not rocket science . . .

White House seeks to discredit Fauci amid coronavirus surge

Many of the past statements the White House is criticizing Fauci for are ones that were based on the best available data at the time and were widely echoed by Trump and other officials.

            • Two counties in Florida have median age of positives in the 20s -- guess which two fast-growing COVID-19 counties they are [think Florida and Florida State; and these data are several days old]

C'mon Atti baby. Our State is leading the country. We showed New York and California what for! Where's my Covid flag? I had it here somewhere.

The rocket scientists are down at Cape Canaveral and they are from out-of-state.
The rest of us seem to be a severely inbred Neanderthal strain that is obviously incapable of rational thought.
When I came here, my lobotomy was performed at the Welcome Station, where I got some delicious orange juice (it may have been Tang) and a set of Mickey Mouse ears, which I still dutifully wear.
                    Sigh.

It is a hyper partisan publication, from the choices of topics and events to cover as well as the perspective and spin given to what is covered it is glaring and obvious. If you need that kind of writing the NYT is going to deliver.

                          • Meanwhile....in the Times...

Cases are reaching alarming levels in the Midwest.

Indiana was among the first states in the Midwest to begin reopening in early May. The state was on track to enter its final phase (Phase 5) of reopening by the Fourth of July but as cases began rising, Gov. Eric Holcomb, a Republican, announced the state would instead enter an interim “Phase 4.5.” Mr. Holcomb’s amended executive order stops short of fully reopening but allows fairs and festivals, youth overnight camps and even conventions of up to 250 people to continue. Face coverings are “strongly recommended” but not required.
In Vanderburgh County, Indiana, cases have more than doubled since June 24. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke announced that a mandatory mask order for indoor spaces only will go into effect on Wednesday.

“I think wearing face coverings is one easy way to stop the spread and avoid future drastic actions that no one wants to take,” Mr. Winnecke said. In contrast, he said shutting down businesses was “not practical.”
In Kansas, average daily case counts are at their highest levels and in Sedgwick County, which includes Wichita, cases have more than doubled since June 25. Local officials in Wichita have attempted to slow the spread by issuing a universal mask ordinance and banning gatherings of more than 45 people.

Florida set a single-day U.S. record with over 15,000 new cases. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos pushes for U.S. schools to reopen.

As Trump Demanded Schools Reopen, His Experts Warned of ‘Highest Risk’

A briefing packet for federal emergency response teams details the steps schools should take to reopen safely.

Federal materials for reopening schools, shared the week President Trump demanded weaker guidelines to do so, said fully reopening schools and universities remained the “highest risk” for the spread of the coronavirus.

The 69-page document, obtained by The New York Times and marked “For Internal Use Only,” was intended for federal public health response teams to have as they are deployed to hot spots around the country.

And its suggestions for mitigating the risk of school reopenings would be expensive and difficult for many districts, like broad testing of students and faculty and contact tracing to find people exposed to an infected student or teacher.
