I live in Portland, OR. I had to show my proof of vaccination and wear a mask to get into a movie. I’m very comfortable with that level of caution. There is a reason why our deaths per million and cases per million are toward the bottom of the list.

I'm with both my 88 year old FIL and MIL when they go to the doctor and myself twice last year. In no case was being vaccinated brought up. Masks were required.

    FL also.

That probably depends on the state.

Hospitalizations and new cases are also off their recent peaks.
And today, the Rt in New Jersey fell under 0.50 to 0.49.

Let's hope so. Still it's hundreds of thousands.(in America alone) It might be years before we see the real damage Covid has done to people's long term health. It also seems that long term covid may be causing similar brain damage as Dementia.

"Governments and health systems around the world should be prepared to deal with the likely significant contribution of the COVID-19 pandemic to a rise in the burden of cardiovascular diseases," the authors caution. "Because of the chronic nature of these conditions, they will likely have long-lasting consequences for patients and health systems and also have broad implications on economic productivity and life expectancy."

    Be afraid, be very afraid.

"Any infection with COVID-19regardless of severity—seems to increase the risk of heart ailments for survivors, according to a new study that one researcher called "stunning."

The study found an increased risk of 20 different heart and vessel issues for those who’ve had the virus a year earlier, Science magazine reported.

"Governments and health systems around the world should be prepared to deal with the likely significant contribution of the COVID-19 pandemic to a rise in the burden of cardiovascular diseases," the paper read, according to the report.

Eric Topol, a cardiologist at Scripps Research, told the magazine that he was surprised by the findings and called the ailments "serious disorders."

"If anybody ever thought that COVID was like the flu this should be one of the most powerful data sets to point out it’s not," he said, referring to the study that ran in Nature Medicine earlier this week.

Reuters reported that the study found that those who recovered from the virus had about a 63% higher risk of having a heart attack and a 52% greater risk of stroke one year later. The news outlet also said those who recovered had a 72% higher risk of heart failure. The elevated risks seemed to impact everyone, regardless of sex, age or whether there were pre-existing conditions, the report said. The magazine pointed out that even those who were not hospitalized also had greater risk of cardiovascular disease.

Its beginning to remind me of the great opening line from Hemingway's short story, In Another Country, "In the fall, the war was still there, but we did not go to it anymore."

It ain't over til it's over.

Omicron has been particularly lethal to people over 75, the unvaccinated and the medically vulnerable, according to doctors and public health officials.

"the seven-day average of deaths during the omicron surge has reached2,600 in recent days, climbing past the late September peak of about 2,000 average daily fatalities during the surge of the more dangerous delta variant, according to Post tracking. The ranks of hospitalized patients with covid-19 reached record highs in January. Coronavirus deaths lag hospitalizations.

The latest victims tend to be older, according to a Post review of federal data. Nearly half of the deaths in January 2022 were among those 75 and older, compared to about a third in September.

Florida has seen similar age trends, with seniors making up about 85 percent of deaths last winter, about 60 percent during the delta surge and back to about 80 percent in the omicron surge. He suspects factors include seniors who were recently vaccinated during the delta surge but did not get boosters ahead of omicron and higher raw numbers of seniors infected in the latest wave."

“You are flooding the system with so many patients that the crude number of deaths is going to be higher, but what we really focus on is the death rate,” said Robert Citronberg, Advocate Aurora Health’s executive medical director of infectious disease and prevention. He noted nearly all the latest deaths have been among the unvaccinated.

“There’s also a big group of patients who are politically motivated and don’t want to be told what to do,” Citronberg said. “They are willing to die from this disease because they don’t want to be told what to do, and it’s basically crazy.”

They're in 2 tables. The second table has a third category for boosted folks and includes the time period after the January 19 study. It removes much of the confusion from that study. The Jan 19 study never claimed that natural immunity was as good as vaccination. It showed that the arrival of Delta coincided with waning of vaccine induced immunity, and clearly stated that further study would be needed. It stated in the summary that vaccination was still the best course to prevent future illness and deaths. That's what this latest release addresses and makes clear.

I tried copying the column titles but doesn't work. Just look for Table 2 to see how these total and weekly numbers are labelled.

It's interesting how just over 10 days ago, people were ready to say "Maybe Novax was right....etc" and how quickly that evaporated. That's why the CDC pointed out the limitations in the first study, but the media typically ignores that.
