  • Two disturbing likelihoods - 1. In the next 2-3 weeks we'll pass the 2,977 deaths on 9/11 on a daily basis in the U.S. 2. In December the U.S. COVID-19 deaths will surpass the U.S. combat deaths from its four years fighting in WWII, 291,557.

Coronavirus infection rates dropped in Kansas counties that adopted mask mandates over the summer, while rising sharply in counties that didn’t institute such requirements, according to research published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The weekly average for new infections per 100,000 people fell by 6 percent in the two-dozen Kansas counties that complied with a July executive order from Gov. Laura Kelly (D) that required masks in public, the CDC found. In the 81 counties that opted out of the order, the rate increased by 100 percent.

                  • Hong Kong scraps travel bubble with Singapore as Asia hit by wave of new Covid-19 clusters

A bubble between Hong Kong and Singapore was scrapped just 24 hours before its launch after a coronavirus spike as alarm bells were raised across Asia amid a spike in Covid-19 clusters.

Hong Kong reported 43 new cases on Saturday - a large outbreak by the city’s standards.

On the other hand, Singapore is currently on a 12 day streak of no local transmission, the longest since... I don't know, maybe February?

                      • From a recent study about Nursing Homes.
                        https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/...1111/jgs.16951
"Our plot of nursing home staff and resident cases
(Figure 1) revealed a clear surge across the six states (Idaho,
Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and
Wisconsin) since early September, with weekly staff cases more
than tripling to 930 in the week ending October 25 and weekly
resident more than quadrupling to 716 . By October , resident
deaths also increased, with the 4 weeks in October showing
the highest four consecutive weeks since re porting
                        began.

For the week ending October 25, one in Five nursing
homes reported shortages of PPE, unchanged since early
June. Wisconsin reported the highest shortages (30%) of
PPE. One in four nursing homes reported shortages of nurs-
ing staff. Although almost all facilities reported testing resi-
dents for COVID-19 during the week, 12% reported that
they did not test staff during that time."

We knew Elder Care homes were hot spots for the virus. My sister died in one in April. Have we learned nothing?

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota on Wednesday took the extraordinary step of banning people from different households from meeting indoors or outdoors, even though evidence has consistently shown the outdoors to be relatively safe.
But the executive order allows places of worship, funeral homes and wedding venues — while they are encouraged to hold virtual events — to host as many as 250 people indoors.
Vermont likewise forbade people from meeting neighbors for a socially distanced and masked walk, but permitted them to dine indoors at restaurants before 10 p.m.
These recommendations are unscientific and “bizarre,” said Ashleigh Tuite, an infectious disease modeler at the University of Toronto.

                          • Our governor briefly banned fishing early in the pandemic. He was responding to crowded boat launches, but it was still frustrating, and of course used to undermine confidence in everythign else he was doing.

                            • The state of Victoria hit a landmark of zero active cases today compared to 7,880 active cases on 11 August. This is proof that the if the right steps are taken, the virus can be effectively contained.

The hotel quarantine viral escape in South Australia seems to have been contained with only one new case in 3 out of the last 4 days. All cases have been linked back to the original case, so it appears that quarantine of all direct and indirect contacts will contain transmission until it peters out.

If that happens, there's a chance for Australia to reach two full case-free infection cycles for local transmission before the end of the year.

Both the Victorian and South Australian quarantine failures are indicative of an unwillingness to understand that effective infection control requires specialist facilities and well trained and resourced staff. You know, like we had in infectious disease/quarantine facilities for more than a century until bean counters decided they were too expensive and not needed.

Penny wise and pound foolish? You betcha!
