  • South Africa will share its unused doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine with the African Union, the country’s health minister said on Tuesday.

South Africa, which had bought 1.5 million doses of the vaccine, decided to pause plans to distribute it this month after a small trial failed to show that it could prevent mild or moderate cases of Covid-19 caused by the worrisome variant that has overrun the country.

South Africa’s decision not to use the AstraZeneca vaccine, at least for now, highlights the difficult choices countries will face as more variants circulate even as vaccine shortages abound in many places. The vaccine was the only one approved in the country, and the news about the disappointing trial results came just days before its much-anticipated rollout had been set to begin.

Jabs rollout at risk over bags shortage

Covid vaccine makers fear they will run out of liners for production tanks

HANNAH KUCHLER — NEW YORK JOE MILLER — FRANKFURT

Vaccine manufacturers are struggling to secure supplies of giant plastic bags used in bioreactors that mix pharmaceutical ingredients, creating a bottleneck that threatens the rollout of Covid-19 shots around the world.

Some vaccine makers have been days away from stalling production because of the shortage of these bags, which can hold up to 2,000 litres of material, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Covid-19 jabs developed by companies such as BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax are made in the bags, which are used as sterile liners in tanks where the vaccines are produced, although they use differing sizes.

            • As part of my day job have spoken to a couple colleagues in Canada in the last couple days. They both lamented how poorly Canada is doing with the vaccine roll-out. Said that less than 1% of Canadians have received a shot yet. They are both MDs and neither one had been vaccinated yet. Both attributed it to the fact that none of the vaccines or vaccine components are manufactured in Canada so they are relying on importing everything, which is difficult when everyone wants the vaccine. Bad situation and having done my fellowship in Canada (London, Ontario) I feel badly for my friends up there and all the people in a country I really love.

Canada is trying to get a Novavax production facility online inside the country.

                  • The two coronavirus vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna appear to be highly effective against the more transmissible variant of the virus first detected in Britain, according to newly published studies in the New England Journal of Medicine, in a potential boost to vaccination efforts around the globe.

The vaccines, however, showed a decreased ability to neutralize the strain now dominant in South Africa, worrying some researchers and prompting Pfizer and BioNTech to announce they were taking necessary steps to develop a booster shot or updated vaccine. A day after Pfizer’s announcement, a top White House coronavirus adviser said each vaccine developer is planning to update shots to address variants.

I'd guess these numbers are skewed a bit because Covid deaths probably didn't likely really kick into high gear until at least the 2nd quarter and probably well into that quarter.

                              • Two women ‘dressed up as grannies’ tried to get vaccinated in Florida.

                                Maybe it was the bonnets.

Or the gloves that the two women donned, though the temperatures in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday hovered in the 60s.

In a scene right out of a sitcom, the women went to a coronavirus vaccination site “dressed up as grannies,” said Dr. Raul Pino, the health administrator for Orange County, at a news conference on Thursday. Except they were 34 and 44, not over 65, so despite their get-ups, which included spectacles, they were ineligible to get the shots in Florida.
