the no-nonsense, nothing-but-the-facts-m'am C19 thread
Florida's new surgeon general, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, embraces views on COVID so extreme that he would often make a disclaimer before interviews and public speaking events that his views were his own and not those of his former employer — The University of California, Los Angeles.
The Harvard Medical School grad has written over a dozen articles in the Wall Street Journal, USA TODAY, and the New York Daily News expressing views that are controversial and antithetical to those of the medical mainstream. Those include promoting the benefits of hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin against COVID, and criticizing the effectiveness of the COVID vaccine, mask mandates and lockdowns.
He also has been associated with extremist groups including America's Frontline Doctors, whose co-founder Dr. Simone Gold has been indicted in connection with the Jan. 6 Capital riots, and the Tea Party Patriots Action.
And he is a signatory of the Great Barrington Declaration, which criticized most pandemic mitigation measures in favor of natural, or "herd," immunity.
On Sept. 21, 2021, Johnson and Johnson announced the results of a large, real-world Phase 3 clinical trail of its COVID-19 vaccine. This study collected data from March 1, 2020, through July 31, 2021, and found that the effectiveness of the vaccine did not diminish over the duration of the study, even after the delta variant became dominant in the U.S. The one-dose vaccine was 79% protective against COVID-19 infections and 81% protective for COVID-19-related hospitalizations. This indicates that a single Johnson & Johnson shot performs well, even in the presence of the delta and other variants.
Many thanks for the clarification about Dr Ladapo. I’m a retired internist, and have read many of his editorials in the Wall Street Journal, in which he was identified as a professor at the UCLA School of Medicine, and was always shocked by his opinions.

The median vaccinated Democrat says the vaccines are about 88 percent effective at reducing hospitalizations, while the median unvaccinated Democrats pegs the number at 80 percent. The median vaccinated Republican is less sold on the efficacy of the vaccines even than the median unvaccinated Democrat, estimating a 73 percent reduction in hospitalization from the vaccines they’ve taken. But again, that’s in the ballpark.
Which brings us to unvaccinated Republicans.
The median unvaccinated Republican believes that the percentage of unvaccinated people like themselves requiring hospitalization is 5 percent. How does that compare to how they believe the vaccinated fare? It’s exactly the same. They believe the hospitalization rate for vaccinated people is also 5 percent. So the median unvaccinated Republican essentially says the vaccines have net-zero efficacy — i.e. there is no benefit to getting vaccinated when it comes to landing in the hospital.
I don't doubt that unvaccinated Republicans have less faith in the vaccine than the other 3 groups but you quoted a different stat for them than you used for the other 3 groups?
Got the booster shot today. Walmart pharmacy was busy with booster and flu shots. Curiously, visiting with other waiting senior citizens, found that many had middle age anti-vax children, mostly for conspiracy theories.

I just posted from the article. How are the stats different?

They are not different. When the median scores for four groups are 88, 80 73 and 0, it's hard to process that information. The way the article is written could be a bit misleading, though.
Large Majorities of Americans, Both Vaccinated and Not, Say COVID-19 is Likely to Persist at Lower Levels and Be Something the U.S. Will “Learn to Live With” like Seasonal Flu
More than 7 in 10 adults (72%) in the U.S. now report that they are at least partially vaccinated against COVID-19, with the surge in disease and death driven by the Delta variant serving as the chief impetus in recent weeks, finds the latest KFF COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor.
No surprise here. I remember when AIDS was a death sentence in the 80's there were prostitutes in Kenya who never contracted it or died even though their clientele were heavily infected. They supposedly had "killer T Cells."
