"Deltacron" discovered in Cyprus. When two different strains of a virus infect the same host, they can exchange genetic material to generate a new strain. This combo may have already developed independently in the US, given the high prevalence of both delta and omicron in December.
A researcher in Cyprus has discovered a strain of the coronavirus that combines the delta and omicron variant, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.
Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, called the strain “deltacron,” because of its omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, Bloomberg said.
So far, Kostrikis and his team have found 25 cases of the virus, according to the report. It’s still too early to tell whether there are more cases of the strain or what impacts it could have.

There are more patients and, in some places, not enough health care workers to go around. Research shows the crowding will impact care and increase mortality for all patients.
US covid hospitalizations hit a record high. This is probably a good answer to why not trying to mitigate omicron spread is a bad idea.

A scientist in an island country discovers that in dozens of COVID-19 patients, the Delta and Omicron viral variants have fused genetically to form a third variant, more powerful and deadly than any before.
If it seems like science fiction, that's because it probably is.
Reports over the weekend set the internet abuzz with news of a new variant known as "Deltacron," discovered in Cyprus by Leondios Kostrikis, PhD, of the University of Cyprus Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology. Bloomberg first reported that Kostrikis, speaking on the Cypriot station Sigma TV, said the new strain combined elements of Delta and Omicron and could have come from patients with "coinfection" of both variants of SARS-CoV-2 at the same time
But other experts, responding on Twitter, said that this alleged mega-variant was likely just a result of lab contamination. Tom Peacock, PhD, of the Barclay Laboratory of Imperial College London, wrote that this kind of contamination isn't uncommon in labs. He tweeted that "very, very tiny volumes of liquid can cause this" kind of sequencing contamination, but "usually these fairly clearly contaminated sequences are not reported by major media outlets."

Research at Oregon State U finds that some of the chemicals in hemp prevent covid from entering human cells.
Van Breemen and collaborators, including scientists at Oregon Health & Science University, found that a pair of cannabinoid acids bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people.
The compounds are cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, CBDA, and the spike protein is the same drug target used in COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapy. A drug target is any molecule critical to the process a disease follows, meaning its disruption can thwart infection or disease progression.

I got asked about this the other day. Its incredibly premature to say anything about it clinically. The study is a lab study - they studied cannabis on cultured human lung cells in a petri dish, basically. So there is no clinical correlation about if it works at all. Secondly, this is a pre-print, meaning it has not been peer reviewed or especially not accepted by a reputable journal after peer review. One of the problems with the internet is that there are now all these pre-print sites where people can post what they are submitting to journals so they are the "first" to publish on a certain topic. Our group of the major orthopaedic journal editors has made a policy decision that we do not want authors to post pre-prints before publication because of the risk of biasing the peer review process.
It 's possible that this may work to decrease clinical symptoms in humans, but this is a long way from showing that it does.

A good sign on Wednesday: the Rt (Replacement) rate in NJ fell under 1.0 to 0.92. The recent peak was 1.92 on 1/1. A number under 1.0 means that current patients are likely to pass on the virus to less than one new patient which means the trend is contracting.
Hospitalizations and new cases are also off their recent peaks.
