Also, we now know that being vaccinated doesn't prevent you from catching covid, and there would be no way for Japan to authenticate an athlete's proof of vaccination anyway.
But you far less likely to catch it or pass it on if you are vaccinated.

Lots of countries are allowing visitors if you show a card...

The precaution might have been because the Japanese weren't too keen on the Olympics and tried to make it as onerous as possible for the visitors.

Which, of course, made it much safer for everyone else.

Also, as I forecast before, the Japanese attitude towards the games shifted once they started.

It will shift to largely positive as the Olympics recede in the rear-view mirror.

        1. The Olympics will be held in Tokyo this year. At worst, a sport or few will be removed from Tokyo and they'll hold their Olympic competition in another country, during or after the Games.

        2. Vaccines, pre-flight and post-arrival Covid testing, bubble protocols during the Games, and spectator limitations will bring the result of no measurable outbreaks in Japan related to the Games.

        3. The End.

        • Yesterday two of our college football town sports radio talking heads, who watched NBC's primetime coverage every night, talked about their memories of the Olympics and both said the highlight of the Olympics for them were the two 400 hurdles finals. They said that the Olympics didn't seem quite the same without fans but they noticed that it didn't seem to affect the athletes.

As I said before it is over and done and a good friend's son got to run in the Olympics like she and her sister..

Meanwhile I'm looking forward to my season tickets on the 2nd row in the homestretch near the finish line next year at Hayward...

And I have an even better seat in the front row next weekend....

And Japan itself is a country like that, with less than 20% of their adult population fully vaccinated the week before the Games began.
My note wasn't meant to say they weren't requiring vaccines, but that vaccination meant nothing. All the restrictions were in place whether you were vaccinated or not. Being vaccinated meant nothing.

That's the country, not our state, thank goodness.

Sounds like Hawaii's current attitude toward tourists in general.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee will require athletes hoping to compete at the 2022 Winter Olympics to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Dec. 1.

USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland announced the new policy in a letter to stakeholders on Wednesday. The letter and an internal document, both obtained by Yahoo Sports, clarify that the policy also applies to coaches, staffers and "our full Team USA delegation at future Olympic and Paralympic Games."
