That's what I thought. The money amount is NOT insignificant to the IOC.

    • Somehow I think the blowback from the IOC suing a country for not wanting the Olympics during a pandemic would be something to consider.... but then again it is the IOC... who have the morals of the Mafia....

"Pompous" IOC demands "led to withdrawal of Oslo 2022 Olympic bid"

      • On another note, I hope the optimism of Bach and Coe prevail. As Coe says, if anyone can pull this off, and in an acceptably safe manner, it is Japan.

        • And you don't want these guys marching in to serve the subpoena!

They were saying the same thing last year....

Tight border controls in Japan may severely curtail spectators or journalists from attending, and those who do arrive may have their movements in the country monitored and restricted. Athletes may be asked to arrive just before their events and depart immediately afterward rather than celebrate in the city and enjoy the camaraderie of the Olympic Village as Olympians tend to do.

            • I'm very happy with few spectators (family should be there), but I worry about a 10,000 person Oly village.

              • Some athletes shelving Olympic bids amid delayed Tokyo Games

Along with his new responsibilities, Gardiner was also fed up with the uncertainty. He held out hope that Europe’s qualifying tournament — postponed last March — would be held in February. If so, he may have given it a shot. He was scheduled to fight in the round of 16.

“But when they got moved back to April, I was like, ‘I’m not going to be able to do it,’” he said. “I was also thinking they might get moved back (yet) again.”

                • What an interesting juxtaposition this is. Having athletes who bow out of Olympic competition for health reasons, when far too many in the past have admitted to jeopardizing their health with PEDs just to be there.

Here's hoping that caution, and vaccines, will help the Games go off without incident.

                  • That's it then. Just needs official admittance of the PM of the reality.

                    • Indeed....Dwight Stones suggested this...

The government’s focus is now on securing the Games for Tokyo in the next available year, 2032, the newspaper said.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga this week said the showpiece event would “bring hope and courage to the world.”
That's the problem, it SHOULD, but at this point, it may bring despair and death . . .
I really hope it can be worked out safely, not DESPITE the danger.

There may indeed be some clandestine agreement to cancel, but they are being prudent by delaying the announcement. They have to wait till March to look like they tried. Here's hoping something changes in the next two months.

                              • As much as I hate to see this possibly happening, I would be far more disappointed to see the Games crippled by infections throughout the competitors. This may be just one more thing that we are asked to sacrifice due to the rampant virus. My heart breaks, though, for those athletes who will miss out on what might be their best shot. No one comes out of this a winner......
