Tokyo Olympic CEO: Games next year may not be ‘conventional’

“The actual games we will have one year from now may not be the same conventional Olympic and Paralympic Games that we have come to know,” he said, speaking in Japanese and translated through in interpreter.

Muto floated ideas about cuts everywhere, though the only specific target he mentioned was the torch relay.

“We are looking into every possible area,” he said. “It’s time for all of us to review what are the essential things for the games. What are the must-have items? … I think we might come up with a new Olympic and Paralympic Games, something that is unique to Tokyo.”

Wonder how much money they could save by simply scratching all the bonus treatment for VIPs. Let them stay at the village instead of 5-star hotels, Let them use the busses instead of limousines with drivers. Cancel the per diems for IOC members, they get free everything at Olympic games anyway. Last number i have are 450$ for IOC members, 900$ for Executive board members 900 USD per day. 900 USD for people who get everything paid, travel, hotel, free dinners. That's a million saved right there. Add the millions wasted on first class flights, 5 star hotels etc for all these guys, several more millions.

$20 billion and probably lots more and you are talking about a few million.....that will make a big difference...

The problem is the Games are way too big.....too many athletes....too many sports....

They are not trying to save 20 billion, the estimation for additional costs is 800 million. You are not going to save 800 million all at once, so start by the most useless expenses, aka IOC VIP treatment.

The Olympics are too big....VIP treatment or not....

The Olympics should be cut about 60% .....and probably will now.....forget Tokyo which I doubt will happen....but I can't see Paris happening without a radically scaled down Olympics....

I'm OK with that. Over-bloated already. It's just a bunch of grown men and women playing kids' games. T&F is elemental - leave it that way.

Right, because T&F is so popular all over the world. Is it even in the top100 sports in the US? Even Coe doesn't give a s*it about half the events and arguing to keep all events at the Olympics is going to be a bit difficult when Coe is cutting events from the DL. "Why should we keep the TJ at Olympics if you don't want it in your main series" is something the IOC could ask.

The Olympics in its present form is on life support....cuts are coming....track sadly will likely be part of it...

But saying the bloat must stay so the triple jump can survive isn't much of an argument...

Btw track at the Olympics is popular.....so I don't think track cuts will be too draconian from the Olympics....perhaps only 2 per nation for instance...swimming already has it.
