A day after Dan Mullen said that Florida had been a “model of safety” with how it was dealing with the coronavirus, Florida said that it was suspending all football activities after players had tested positive for COVID-19.

Paraphrasing Daniel Kaffee and Col. Nathan R. Jessup

        "Is this hilarious, sir?"
        "No, its not, its tragic."

        • Meanwhile....

More than 60% of Power 5 athletic leaders would support breaking away from the NCAA to form a fourth NCAA division. That and more from a sweeping Knight Commission survey of college administrators

Might as well - can call it the Pro Division . . . as all the NCAA restraints go bye-bye. It will be chaos, and many colleges will quit 'Varsity' sports altogether.
Better yet, just restructure it as NFL minor leagues, which is what it really is at the top. No matter that only a handful of college players make it in the pros - anarchy!

                  • Twenty-one Florida players have tested positive. That's some good numbers!

                    • The SEC's Surge of COVID-19 Cases Is a Predictable Result of Pandemic Football

America wanted football during a pandemic. Needed football during a pandemic. Demanded football during a pandemic.

Well, this is what we get with football in a pandemic: a COVID-19 forest fire that keeps gathering oxygen. A Game of the Year on the brink. A cascade of cancellations, postponements and rearrangements.

                      • Am I right in assuming this has nothing to do with 'wanting' to play football and everything to do with WANTING the money that it brings in (TV)?

Probably and a lot of people in denial about the virus and just don't care.

College football, conflicted for months on what to do, ultimately forged onward. In some locales, the jocks and the politicians joined forces to browbeat university and conference administrators into playing. Schools performed ethical backbends, pushing on with practices and games while campuses shut down.

                          • Don't forget that in college football just like the pros, all players were allowed to opt out without being penalized.

Right....in the warped college atmosphere I'm sure that meant alot.

                              • The crippling of a team that finished second in the Mountain Division last year might leave Utah State and its conference mates salivating, but they could be in for a similar fate. If their players get spooked about the repercussions of the coronavirus on their health, the health of their loved ones or their season, they, too, have the choice to opt out.

Or they’re supposed to, according to the NCAA. But apparently not everyone, in particular USU coach Gary Andersen, supports that choice.

“At least in our program, we don’t have an opt-out. And it’s not an option,” Andersen said last week during a conference call with reporters. “If you opt out, you’re not with us.”
