I've never watched "American Idol", but their impact on modern music would seem to be about nil.
What if the Academy Awards devoted a large portion of their telecast to "actors" from "Survivor" or "The Real World"?
When you pander to the lowest common denominator of American musical taste, it's amazing guys like McCartney bother to show up, and guys like me bother to watch.
Word.
The real survivors are those who refuse to listen to the 3 note, 1 key, 1 chord, 2 word, repeat-a-beat-to-death garbage, that renders too many children brain dead by the age of 14. Or watch Survivor, that's potentially more dangerous:
Uh, not to be too uncharitable, but no, he doesn't. Whatever he had, he has lost most of it. I saw Sly live a few weeks ago in San Jose, CA. Prior to his set they had video of Sly back in the day. He was one wildly active and engaging entertainer. He is a shell of that now. Kind of like watching the thorazine-loaded (or whatever) Brian Wilson on stage these days. More sad than anything . . .
