Didn't the world federation MANDATE that all women in beach volleyball must wear bikinis a while ago?

Yes, but in this case the FIVB ruled that out of respect for the traditions and cultures of the [douchebag] country the event is being held in the athletes should wear shirts and trousers.

That's not quite an exact quote.

My point is this: is being forced to compete scantily dressed any less restrictive than being forced to cover yourself a bit more (and we're not talking wearing burqas here)? There are plenty of sports where women don't compete in bikinis even in extreme heat.

The rule was bikini or body suit.

Here's what the bikinis looked like:

As you can see, the small Olympic bib with the three-letter country code covers the front of the upper half of the uniform. I thought it was great to see the players representing the host country of the Rio Olympics wearing bibs that said BRA.

This is kind of [insert non-sexist adjective here] in juxtaposition with this:

                Sexist?
The FIVB ruling committee that mandates skimpy attire for international beach V-Ball is pictured here (https://www.fivb.com/en/congress2018...eater?id=67325)
3 women and 18 men. All but one of the guys look to be retirement age. The phrase "dirty old men" comes to mind...

This cannot have been much of a surprise when the tournament was scheduled for Qatar. If individual players choose not to participate for this reason, that is their right. And the Qataris must have anticipated this would be an issue, but the participants should be a wee bit more attuned to the cultural issues.

Many of us have traveled to the Middle East for our jobs, and are familiar with the fact that social norms are different. Out of respect for the hosts, we make an effort to comply with the cultural standards, within reason.
