Rumours on Twitter that 18 yr old Beatrice Masilingi has run 49.24 in Namibia, just ahead of her 17 yr old training partner Christine Mboma, 49.28.

it is assumed to be altitude assisted, but regardless, I fear we are going to find ourselves in another dreadful Seyni situation.

I really don't know what to say and what should happen. But something needs to happen soon to protect these young women.

The capital, Windhoek, is at 1,655 m (5,430 ft).

Update - it appears to have been at Lusaka, Zambia which is at 1,279 metres (4,196 ft).

Not sure whether that was serious or tongue-in-cheek... These countries certainly could have many world-class athletes if they had the same sort of development/ support systems as the more developed ones. But these marks still set off all sorts of alarm bells.

Totally serious. I don't know anything about these women, so offer no opinion about them, other than I take these marks at face-value PENDING confirmation that the appropriate testing has been done, just like everyone else, USA, Polish, whatever.

The marks are legit. PJ effectively timed the performances from the Facebook feed to check. Yes, they were run at altitude, so there is an adjustment to be made there. However, it was also the manner of Mboma's victory; it was very Seyni-like, coming through tremendously fast in the final 100m. She had run a 2:03 over 800m the day before, and Masilingi a Tokyo QT in the 200m, of 22.72, so she will be there either way.

Tilastopaja has Christine Mbonga, not Mboma, DOB May 22, 2003, turning 18 next month and so no long U18 eligible. She ran 50.97 on March 27. Tilastopaja does not yet have the results referred to above, nor the Miramar meet. Too bad TrackInSun is no longer around.

Those marks at that age are unlike anybody else, USA, Polish or whatever. Let's hope the relevant testing is done *before* the Olympics rather than stripping medals after the fact if the test results turn out that way.

That's cynical. Let's just take a heatlthy skepticism for breakout performances like this. They happen all the time with young talent. Terrance Laird was just a 20.41 talent before this year. Jaylen Slade was a 21.35 sprinter.
