She might have got tested for PEDs, including testosterone, but to determine she was DSD and not on drugs, WA must have taken some additional steps.

Both have been withdrawn from the 400m according to the article. Doesn't say the Olympics as a whole. So they can apparently compete in the 200m.

I can't recall....would they be required to take testosterone lowering medication in order to compete in an event which is not the 400m to 1500m?

Yes, they probably took some additional steps. But shouldn't a lab be able to tell the difference natural testosterone produced by your own body and artificial testosterone?

There was a DSD runner a few years ago who got suspended for also having artificial testosterone.

You are correct. That is what I meant to say, but I worded it incorrectly.

They were withdrawn from the 400 meters, not from the 200. Yes, they can compete in the Olympics in the 200 without lowering their testosterone.

No difference that a lab will pick up.

            • In one week, the womens 400 in Tokyo has gone from world record watch to anyone who breaks 50 in the final might medal.

She surely would have been drug tested back in April when she first broke the WJR. Even if there was no drug testing at the meet, AIU or whoever would presumably swoop in and try to get a biological passport started ASAP, and of course the suspicions of a possible DSD probably started from that point, if not sooner. Of course maybe I am assuming too much about the competence level of AIU.

If there is an issue involving a DSD (and presumably there is since she has only been withdrawn from the 400), that is a time consuming process to sort out. It definitely did not happen between yesterday and today.

This is really messy because she can still compete in the 200, which is very confusing to the public (and everyone else TBH, it never made sense to only restrict certain events, though I get why it happened).

It is also messy, because why was she allowed to compete this whole time? If her testosterone levels were high in April, IMO she should have been provisionally suspended while it was sorted out. Having a situation where she keeps racing leads to record being smashed, video going viral, and now World Athletics looks racist because once again they are shutting down successful African women. If she had not been allowed to run going back to April, it would have been... quieter.

One important thing to remember is that only _certain_ DSDs are restricted. Is it possible she has a DSD that is not on that list? She definitely does not have as masculine of a build as Semenya, and her voice is not as deep.

Again, I just don't understand why this was not sorted out sooner, but it is also really unclear how far along we are in the process...

I was thinking the same thing. It's amazing how many sub 50 runners won't be running the 400 in Tokyo.

On the other hand, the 200 has gotten really competitive. Maybe Miller-Uibo will run the 400 after all?

They'd have to confirm her chromosomes and androgen sensitivity too. The intersex regulation is quite specific and just having elevated testosterone isn't enough to cause an athlete to be banned.

Yes, I really encourage people to read through the DSD regulations sometime.

For athletes with certain DSD conditions, the 200 and 5000 are not restricted events, it is only the distances in between.

I'm sure the 200 will be restricted next year, now that World Athletics has data on these athletes, but they will be free to run unfettered in Tokyo in the 200.

                          • Naser, Mboma and SCR all in 48 hours. As far as the track landscape goes, that's like accelerated continental drift.

Miller-Uibo would have to be a masochist to want to pick the 200 over the 400. But then she is married to a decathlete which is the epitome of masochism (well maybe the marathon is worse)
