Chicago has them every 17 years also. The last time was 2007. Hardly a plague....they make a lot of noise but that is about it.

I wonder why South Carolina is spared.

I was wondering about that. Maybe they're boycotting the state.

You would think every year would be the 17th year after 17 years ago. How do the cicadas decide on which is the 17th year?
And, how does Wisconsin stop them at the Illinois and Mich UP line?

Because it's really just the western edge of North Carolina and northern edge of Georgia that will be affected. This other map has a more granular picture of where they'll emerge.

I remember that cohort in Louisville in 1970.

                Aren't they harmless?

Its the Cicada killers that are problematic. They ruin my yard starting every July

Completely harmless. They don't fly around either....just cover trees and telephone poles...and make a huge racket.

We have full-time cicada in Bergen County, NJ, so the 17-year variety is not quite as big a deal. I saw a fair amount of the later 34-years ago but fewer 17-years ago which may be a sign that development reduced their numbers.

I am at war with Cicada killers every July and August. Every evening at dusk at I am pouring boric acid down the burrows. I still havent figured out to stop them from coming back to my yard. There are some chemicals available online. Unfortunately they are banned in my state.

My memories from the last iteration in Alabama, 17 years ago, focus on the noise. Where I worked was in an area surrounded by trees which apparently hosted happy hours for the little buggers each afternoon. The combined sound would create a rolling pulse of volume, which was impressive. Rather reminded me of the alien craft from the original War of the Worlds movie.
