body shaming at Oregon?

If an athlete gets a big scholarship at a school like Oregon, there's an understanding going in that they're there to score points at the PAC 12 and NCAA Championships, not just to participate.

Of course they get that. They all do. The top women athletes I knew would do most anything to get better. They don't need a coach deriding them.

My niece got full tuition but she just started maturing sophomore year...and the coach couldn't handle it. It got rather ugly.

The age old mentality that thinner is always better....and a universal weight for everyone....I know quite a few counterexamples.

That's one thing I'm struggling with here. A lot of aspects of being an elite athlete are unhealthy. Does anyone think Nick Saban and Kirby Smart don't encourage their linemen to gain weight from time to time? When you sign on to run for Oregon, you know there are high expectations. If you can't meet those expectations without abusing your body, maybe you should consider another school. There are plenty of college programs that don't do things like this, go there.

As mentioned elsewhere this is rather common...even nonelite schools.

If a coach believes that scoring a point at a conference meet is more important than staying healthy, he should be open about that when he recruits a student athlete. Then the student athlete can make her decision. Don't count on some vague notion of understanding or expectation that students athletes will be willing to sacrifice their health to score a point for their coach.

You must really want USA T&F to die. Without the college farm system (and scholarships are a vital part of that), USA fortunes would plummet.
Athletic scholarships do a lot of good for a lot of people, just as academic, artistic, tech, etc. scholarships do.
Would universal scholarships be a good thing? Absolutely! But we all know that won't happen even in the most liberal pipe-dream.

Kids run track in high school without scholarships quite well. Also D3.....

How about firing coaches who harass athletes into unhealthy situations? Seems better than taking scholarships from athletes and pushes the blame from the victim to the oppressor.

I have it on good authority that one of the Oregon "performance coaches" (who, it turns out, was also affiliated with the Nike Oregon Project, no surprise there) told one of the Oregon female distance runners she needed to get down to 4% body fat.

That person is an idiot if this is true. Even men can't get down that low and perform optimally.

Universities would be far better without the emphasis on college sports. Getting rid of scholarships would be a start.
