I suspect it will be a mixed bag here as to who has memories of this PBS show. Debuted October 25, 1971. It was aimed at teaching kids to read, particularly kids in the early elementary years who might be behind grade-level in reading. I was in 4th grade so pretty much beyond that, but my sister was in kindergarten so it was on our TV most weekday afternoons, much to my annoyance since I suspect it was opposite something more interesting, like Lost in Space or Speed Racer. A lot of the crowd here will be too old to have watched it but too young to have had kids who would have watched.

Oh yeah, cast included Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno, Bill Crosby, and guests like Mel Brooks (an odd one there), Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, and Joan Rivers.

Two years after Sesame Street, as the follow-on to the next age-group.

Why would Mel be odd and Gene not odd?

I was in HS when The Electric Company debuted and I don't recall ever seeing an episode. What makes that odd....that word again...is that I'd watch Sesame Street when it would come on and that includes as an adult.

With Mel Brooks I go to Blazing Saddles, while with Gene Wilder I go to Willy Wonka. But then, maybe 8 year olds would enjoy Blazing Saddles. Certainly more tame than a lot of them see on the Internet these days.
