  • 2022-23 College Basketball

Since I didn't see any thread on this, I decided to start one.

'Most elementary gyms in Indiana are better than that': IU women's tourney venue draws ire (yahoo.com)

Playing basketball tournaments in hotel ballrooms is nothing new. But the amenities in this particular one appeared... lacking.

North Carolina was a very reasonable preseason #1, returning four starters and having picked up Pete Nance from Northwestern as a perfect replacement for Brady Manek. They look to be 10 deep vs 6 deep last year. But had trouble with some teams they should’ve handled easily before finally losing to Iowa State yesterday. Lots of contenders this year.

10 minutes of listening to Bill Walton call the consolation game in the Phil Knight Invitational and I’m already looking forward to The Masters….

There was a year that my high school’s basketball games had higher attendance numbers than this year‘s Phil Knight Invitational.

And NFL football is getting tens-of-millions per game.

What do you think his happening?

I for one would watch random weekday games on ESPN (saw the Jerome Lane backboard game on a Monday?) but now I can't abide NCAA until March and can't abide the NBA at all - all 3's and no D.

            I wonder if that's something?

For example: D is better in the NFL this year than in a long time, and I wonder if people are enjoying that?

Jerome Lane's dunk was in a game at the end of January when many more people have begun to pay attention to College Basketball. This time of year there is a lack of interest. I mentioned a team I thought looked pretty good (Arizona) to a good friend of mine but his response was that he's yet to focus at all on College hoops because he's busy paying attention to college and pro football. The NBA real kickoff date is Christmas Day.

I don't find attendance for a sport I'm usually singularly paying attention to amongst friends at this time of year all that unusual at all.

That tournament must have 20 games? Seems like they’ve been playing for a week.

I think there were two 8-team men’s tourneys and two 8-team women’s tourneys. Roundball not as popular in Portland as in Chapel Hill. Or dozens of other places.

Alabama defeats UNC in 4OT. Only the second time ever that a game between two ranked DI teams went to 4OT. Caleb Love played 57 minutes for the Heels.

                      Women had two 4-team tourneys

Carolina fell 17 spots in the AP poll. I wonder if that’s a record?

As I bemoan UNC's recent performance, I realize it could be worse. Louisville is 0-8. Surely their worst start ever.

                            Worst start in 80 years.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jordan Miller had 14 points, Norchad Omier scored 12 and Miami opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with an 80-53 victory over winless Louisville on Sunday. Miller sank 6 of 10 shots with a 3-pointer for the Hurricanes (8-1), who picked up their fourth straight win. Omier hit 6 of 7 shots, adding two blocks. Isaiah Wong pitched in with 10 points and five rebounds. None of Miami's starters played more than 24 minutes. Jae'lyn Withers led the Cardinals (0-8) with 12 points. Brandon Huntley-Hatfield had 10 points and eight rebounds. Louisville is off to its worst start since the 1940-41 season. That year the Cardinals, then members of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Association — now called the River States Conference — lost their first 11 games. Louisville matched the 1960-61 Virginia Cavaliers for the worst start to a season by an ACC member. Louisville joined the ACC in 2014. Omier had 12 points in the first half and Miller scored 10 as Miami opened up a 42-23 lead at intermission. The Hurricanes led by as many as 32 in the second half. Louisville’s first season under former long-time Kentucky assistant and Cardinals alum Kenny Payne has gone downhill quickly. The Cardinals opened with three straight one-point home losses, to Bellarmine, Wright State and Appalachian State, followed by blowout defeats at the Maui Invitational to Arkansas, Texas Tech and Cincinnati. The Cardinals play a conference game at Florida State on Saturday before hosting Western Kentucky, Florida A&M and Lipscomb with a chance to end their skid. __ More AP college basketball: https://apnews.com/hub/college-basketball and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25

So in addition to Bueckers and Brady, UConn has now lost Fudd, Juhasz and Muhl. They have only seven players left on the roster.

How soon will any of them return?
