  • the 100 greatest movies of all-time....

.... as chosen by 480 directors

Every decade since 1992, Sight and Sound has complemented its celebrated critics’ poll by formally sounding out the world’s leading directors on the ten films they believe to be the greatest of all time. Though it has always been global and inclusive in scope, the poll has expanded significantly each decade. In 1992, 101 directors voted; fast-forward to 2012, when 358 filmmakers took part. This year, for the fourth edition of the poll, we received ballots from 480 directors. This electorate spans experimental, arthouse, mainstream and genre filmmakers from around the world. In every case, the voter is a director of note. Here are the 100 greatest films of all time, as voted for by many of today’s greatest living filmmakers.

Very few I haven't seen in that list.

It hard to imagine that neither Casablanca nor Les enfants du paradis didn’t make the list.

Of the 100 greatest movies of all time (directors), I have only heard of 27 of them. Of that 27, I have only seen 11. The directors's number 1 movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, has to be one of the most boring movies I have ever seen.

I would love to see a compiled list of critics-directors-fans-boxoffice(inflation adjusted) weighted equally together. Blockbusters would rise, art films would fall, but the end results would be more 'accurate' than any single measure. I think my personal fave, Apocalypse Now, would be Top-10.

I was shocked that The 10 Commandments did not make the list.

Of the best movies compiled by critics, I have only heard of 24 of them. Of that 24, I have only seen 10. The critic's number 1 movie, Jeanne Dielman 23 Quai du Commerce,1080 Bruxelles, never heard of it.

                Yes!!!

And I'm a huge sci-fi fan. It is awful. It's artsy masturbation but not entertaining.

I have lived a sheltered movie life. I have heard of only 17 movies on that list, of which I remember seeing 10.
Update: My sex/relationship/communication author, who was in and still receives royalties from Raging Bull, just called me to critique tonight's Yellowstone episode.

I’m in the high single digits, and that’s counting some movies I’ve seen maybe most of the way through, but not in entirety.

                    this list needs more comedies!

Screw the box office. There is a reason that Grammy is more prestigious than AMA and Billboard Music Award. The same should be true about movies.

I have heard of 44 movies on the list and have seen 22 of them. I am very pleased four of Bergman's movies made the list, as well as The Spirit of Beehive by Erice

                        Yes, my 6 greatest movies

                        Animal House
                        Caddyshack
                        Blazing Saddles
                        There's Something About Mary
                        Trading Places
                        The Hangover

I go to movies to enjoy myself - and if possible, to laugh. I guarantee there were plenty of laughs at all the above. I also suspect all of you have heard of all 6 of these.

I have seen 12 of them all the way through and bits of a few others. Parasite is one of the films I have on my Tivo type box that I will get around to watching one day.

The differences between a directors' list and a critics' list might be interesting.

I've seen 34 of them and though there are some omissions that I personally feel hard to explain, but hey, such lists are always like that, there's no accounting for taste.

I've seen 14 of those, heard of a few more. From my perspective there seemed to be a bunch of foreign or arthouse type films.

I'm like bambam I mostly prefer to be mindlessly entertained. I save the high(er) brow stuff for reading.
