2023 Oscar Noms

Time for the annual mewling about the unwatchable movies that Hollywood bedecks with honors. As usual, I boycotted most of them in the theater, but may watch some streaming.
Top Gun was clearly the most watchable and may actually have a chance to win. Avatar was a waste of visual effects. Elvis was the Welcome Surprise of the Year.

How "Top Gun: Maverick" is a nominee for Best Picture is beyond me. Mrs. DrJay concurs. (She didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but last night she did come across her Greer Garson autograph while going through a bin of mementos.) Two hours and ten minutes of our life we'll never get back.

I enjoyed Top Gun: Maverick.

But Best Picture? And don't get me wrong, I enjoy a mindless action/adventure film. If I'm stretching or working out and one of the Die Hard series is on, I'll watch it, for the umpteenth time. Or keeping with the Tom Cruise theme, The Edge of Tomorrow.

We certainly married the right women. I thought Top Gun 2 was sensationally good, and my wife scolded me for not praising it more!!

Have seen 3. Avatar and Tar, and All quiet on the western front. Avatar deserves visual kudos but as a story, no. Tar is a critics darling, an Blanchett desreves her nomination, and AQWF was cookie cutter. Too hard to see most of these today. I’ll stream some of the more touted ones.

But Best Picture? And don't get me wrong, I enjoy a mindless action/adventure film. If I'm stretching or working out and one of the Die Hard series is on, I'll watch it, for the umpteenth time. Or keeping with the Tom Cruise theme, The Edge of Tomorrow.

For me, based on the other nominees, it probably was the best film I either saw or could have seen as the others I'm not fans of including some I didn't see. For instance Elvis. I just wouldn't have liked the film as both my wife and I are not Elvis fans. So, in keeping with marrying the right woman, we are a match in that regard.

We watched Banshees last week. I thought it was well-written and directed and acted, but so bleak and hopeless. I think I liked In Bruges (with Farrell and Gleeson) better, though it was even darker.

Also watched Pinocchio. A great technical achievement but dragged on, could have been 90 or 100 minutes and done just fine.

In general I don't like re-enactments of singers in bios and don't think I could possibly enjoy a bio of a singer who's songs and/or singing style I didn't enjoy. I like Elton and Queen and there are plenty of videos of concerts they've performed in which is really all I care about.

Nah, I have been watching talkies since 1937. Just none lately.

I agree. I tried to watch George and Tammy, two of my favorites, but could not get the real people out of my mind. Gave up.
