Oh no! I liked her with Ike, but her comeback at age 44 in 1984 with Private Dancer was for the ages!!

      Better Be Good To Me
What's Love Got to Do With It
      I Can't Stand the Rain
      Private Dancer

      etc..

Her gritty voice, natural dancing and gams that went on forever . . .

Off base obit in NYT says: "After the Rolling Stones invited the group to open for them, first on a British tour in 1966 and then on an American tour in 1969, white listeners in both countries began paying attention."
In fact, every kid who watched American Bandstand (like me :-) in the early 1960's was well aware and in awe of Tina and the Ikettes. Sure the Stones put them out front again several years later but it could be argued that they were not only Tina fans but also savvy enough to know that Tina on stage would boost attendance for the tour.

Here in the UK it appears that River Deep Mountain High got to number 3 before they opened for the Stones.

RIP to one of the great musical performers.

My niece got married last month and, despite not being a good dancer, I enjoyed the disco in the evening. During this, at one stage, a new song came on that was fairly quiet and slow that I didn't recognise until someone realised it was her (& Ike's) version of Proud Mary that starts real slow. A couple of minutes later the floor was filled with people dancing and singing along like maniacs.

Tina and the Ikettes also had an uncredited role on two seminal Frank Zappa LPs of 1973.

Best moments from Frank Zappa's recording sessions with Tina Turner and the Ikettes singing backup vocals in 1973. From these sessions came the albums Over-N...

George Harrison referred to River Deep Mountain High as the perfect song. From the guy who wrote "Here Comes the Sun" I don't think there's a better compliment.

The song "Private Dancer" is a favorite of mine. Fantastic blend of writer (Mark Knopfler) session man (Jeff Beck) and incredible vocal (Tina Turner).

In the '90s, her song The Best was the theme song for the British Athletics Supporters Club.
