We could waltz around this forever. The question as given to me (and I haven't researched it) is that both Gulf of Cortes and the Vermillion Sea are FORMER names of the Gulf of California

I'm missing something here. I thought the Gulf of Cortez (aka the Cortez Sea) IS the Vermillion Sea, i.e, the Gulf of California.

But regardless of spelling, that's not the answer

Not when one is speaking of Hernán Cortés.

Baja California is the shore of both these areas where whales go to summer.
