  • MSNBC Names 5 Greatest Comic Book Heroes

(Riffing off a related thread) what do we think of this list?

Far be it from me to suggest that WW is #2 for gender-equity reasons, but their #5 is pathetically laughable. Green Lantern and The Flash are 50 spots above him. I misspent too many youth hours on this stuff not to correct them.

              5 greatest

I believe the MSNBC list was limited to superheroes. There's another thread on "Things Not T & F" about cartoons in general.

I think it's a travesty! The ballot doesn't include Captain Marvel!

                            Thank you!

I'm no Marvel fan (they hit it big AFTER my heyday (comic books were a freakin' DIME then!)), but I would have to admit that Spider-man has closed most of the gap to Batman. I'd put him third. Here's my 1961 Top Ten:

                            1. Superman
                            2. Batman
                            3. (tie) The Flash and Green Lantern
                            5. Green Arrow
                            6. J'onn J'onzz, Manhunter From Mars
                            7. Wonder Woman
                            8. The Atom
                            9. Aquaman
                            10. Hawkman

of course, when they all came together, that was the best, cuz they were

                            The Justice League of America!

Flash and Green Lantern get my nod because they revived the costume super-hero genre. Another favourite of mine is Black Canary! She was part of the old school Justice Society of America and still looks pretty good some 65 years later.
