in gb, for most drinkers, you go for a label you know :
that kumala (?sp), jacobs creek ( where from ? ) get some takers, but
ernest & julio pitched here with there wares ~ 15+y ago ( well, that's when i started drinking them ! )
sure, the $8 glass of merlot i had today was the smoothest red i've had in years ( can't remember name ), but we are not generally sophisticated wine drinkers over here & despite all the french wines plonked in our stores, you stick to what you know - i realised today what a good merlot is, but ernest...
OK, taking off the wine snob hat here for a minute . . .
There is no doubt that the Gallos did a ton to help promote wine in the US, helping set the stage for the explosion of wine consumption and wine making here in the states. As a result of that we have tons of winemakers making tons of excellent wines, and all US wine drinkers and makers owe E&J Gallo a large debt of gratitude.

I'll let you know if I find any in Napa or Sonoma this weekend. :-)
(Actually, Sonoma is very proprietary; many restuarants won't carry anything but that Valley [where do they think they are, France?]; and I've been to a couple that say "no corkage" if you bring in a Sonoma wine.)
