  • Great Baseball Trivia: Most Consecutive Outs

Nothing I claim any knowledge of, but it was in this morning's baseball column. Which pitcher holds the record for most consecutive outs (and what is it)?

    Pitching or batting??

My first guess would have to by Harvy Haddix, who had a perfect game going for something like 13 innings. Too obvious though, so it is probably someone else.

(Somebody stole my Chron this morning - otherwise I would have seen this too by now.)

Harvey Haddix did hold the record, and this guy broke it:

      http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... 01&sc=1000

      Excerpt:
<<X never threw a no-hitter in the major leagues. He was never considered one of the game's most dominant pitchers. He won as many as 15 games only once and finished his career under .500. But for one two-start stretch 35 years ago this month, the sturdy .... right-hander accomplished what no other pitcher has ever done.

In August 1972, X began a record-setting streak in which he retired 41 batters, a streak that bridged two starts. On Aug. 23, he walked Pirates pitcher Bob Moose to lead off the third inning and then he retired the next 21 in a row, completing a two-hitter, an 8-0 win ....

In his next start, he began the game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis by retiring 20 Cardinals before Bernie Carbo doubled with two outs in the seventh inning. X finished with a three-hit, 3-0 victory. His 41 consecutive outs eclipsed the record of 38 set by Harvey Haddix in May 1959.>>

And we all know who got the hit off Harvey, right?

But Adcock passed a baserunner and only got credit for a single.

Yep, it was none other than Hank Aaron...who had walked earlier.

Yes, that was my recollection also. And what other famous thing did Joe Adcock do?

But the fault was Aaron's... he saw the winning run score so just left the field.
