Not a political question: if a candidate--oh, say McCain-- was born on a U.S. miltary base--oh, say, like Panama C.Z.--and they are "naturalized" citizens of the U.S., why would there be any restriction on their becoming prez? Legal eagles have any ideas? What was the Founding Fathers' purpose with this "restriction?"

Just wondering BECAUSE I was born in Panama, C.Z. and was always told I could never run for prez, much to my disgruntlement and of course the county's loss. :lol:

James, your understanding is incorrect. There is no such restriction.

If your parents are US citizens you are a natural born US citizen not matter where you are born. There is no "military base or US controlled soil" requirement.

It's OK, you can run as Ralph Nadar's running mate if you want.

Something is amiss in this situation. Every American embassy is indeed American soil as is America's military bases. Perhaps, it is written into the constitution that the child must be born with the boundaries of the States. And this does not include embassies and military bases.

Actually Bush never claimed as you have mistated that Gitmo was exempt from U.S. law. They claim that enemy combatants should be tried in U.S. Military Courts or tribunals, as has happened in the past.
