  • No March Madness Threads?

I am very surprised that the 3rd day into March Madness and there is absolutely no discussion of the tourney. I really expected someone to want to talk about.

I think that my interest in the tournament would be significantly diminished if I didn't have my office pool going. I'm currently in second, so my interest is going to stay high for a while. I still have 14 out of my final 16 in it, so that is good.

I picked Duke to lose in the first round, and that came so close to happening. That pick was mostly because I hate Duke. I figured that they wouldn't get to the final 16, so why not go for the bonus upset points.

I'll keep posting as long as my picks are doing well.

It's kind of like Notre Dame football. They always seem to be on TV, the networks bow down to them, and they always seem overrated. I don't like North Carolina basketball either, probably due to living in the area for a few years and being exposed to it way too much. I also don't like the fact that the first two rounds of the tournament are almost always in Greensboro (or Raleigh) and Charlotte, and somehow Duke or North Carolina always seem to get put in those regions for virtual home games in the tournament.

That said, they are both solid programs, just overexposed and somewhat overrated.

Side story from my days teaching high school in the Charlotte, NC, area. Just for my fun, I used to put random trivia questions on tests. Students kind of liked them too. One trivia question was to spell coach K's last name. I don't think anyone got it, despite his name being in the headlines constantly. I have to admit that I had to look it up. The best answer was a girl who started a good try at the last name, then finished with the end of supercallifragilisticexpialidocious (and yes, I had to look that up).

Other trivia questions, trying to keep up with current news during the year:
--Who won the first Heisman trophy? Note I went to the same undergrad, otherwise I wouldn't have known. None got it.
--How did Nobel get his fortune? A couple got this.
--What was the first video on MTV? Well known now, but not then. Nobody got it. The girl mentioned above crossed out 'first' and wrote 'worst' and answered 'Let's Get Physical' by Olivia Newton John. Tough to argue with that.
--What was the first word spoken in 'Citizen Kane?' A couple got this.

I figured most of the folks who post around here would be the type to have an entry in the office pool. Part of the reason I was surprised no one had posted anything. I usually have entries online for both the mens and womens tournament. Kansas State is now out of the mens side (but at least they took out USC) and the women play on Sunday.

Coach Trent Johnson ejected early in the first half(two technicals). That isn't going to help the Cardinal cause, and they now trail Marquette at the half.
