I'm sitting hear watching the Australian Open and they mentioned Seles and I started thinking something very similar. Excellent point, 502CD. I think if not stabbed she may have challenged Steffi and even been better. She was the first female to hit the ball really hard on both sides. Not the athlete Graf was, however.

I also think in some mythical tournament of the greats playing all the grand slam tournaments that Serena lays waste to everyone. Forget the physical side, her mental strength is on another level.

Also the tennis world today is far more global then it ever has been.

I know many people say that, but I wonder if that's really true. Another possibility is that the depth in women's tennis today is much greater, so it's harder for the best players to dominate and win tournaments as consistently as Navratilova and Graf did.

I don't necessarily disagree with Navratilova being the more successful player but I think Graf at her best was the better player.

That's fine but using games were Graff was at her best and Navratilova was past it, isn't affair comparison. If anything it goes in Martina's favour considering she beat her a few times. Both would be my all time contenders, especially as the 80's and 90's produced a number of great women's players which sadly declined this past decade when many Tennis players found that modelling contracts in Tennis was pretty damn good money. That to me is why Williams, as impressive as she is, has had an easier number of grand slams to win,

That's the problem with head-to-head statistics...that's why to me there's only one statistic that matters - singles Grand Slam titles.
    8-)
I discount Margaret Court, because she played as an amateur, and we know what the problems were with that era....

But in the Open era, which started in 1968, the list is as follows:

    1) Graf - 22
    2) Evert - 18
    3) Navratilova - 18
    4) Serena - 17 and climbing

I agree with Per. I think its close, but give the edge to Steffi. Martina greatest ever on grass, Steffi greatest ever on all surfaces.

But that's not a fair comparison. By the time Graf started reaching finals, Navratilova was around 30, and already a bit past her prime (although still good enough to beat Steffi in two Grand Slam finals in 1987). It's just unfair to punish her in the rankings for continuing to compete for years after that. She could just as well have retired in 87 or 88; what she'd done by then would have been enough to make her the most successful player ever.

I also wouldn't be so quick to say women's tennis is appalling now....

The Williams sisters have raised the bar. Before they came along, only Seles had a decent service return. Both Venus and Serena punished the poor serves that prevailed before, and forced the new generation to up their game. Serving has improved, returns of serve have improved, all-round court coverage has improved, etc. Graf primarily used a slice backhand, and good though it was, she couldn't survive in this era with a slice backhand. And Evert''s weak serve would've been slaughtered in this era. That's why Hingis was so quick to call it a day....

I prefer to look at who are the most "successful" players of all time.

On that basis, this is my ranking:

    Men
    1) Federer
    2) Sampras
    3) Nadal

    Women
    1) Graf
    2) Serena

I don't think Federer will win any more Slams, sadly, because he's my favourite player to watch. But I do think Nadal and Serena have more Slams in them, so those rankings could well change.
Surely if you speak of success you have to put Martina Navratilova as the women's one. The winner of the most tournaments of either sex. What's more impressive is that she did it against such great rivals, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf which I think goes against Serena who has generally dominated a decade of applauding women's Tennis.
